I had never seen one of these before, but I found a few Z6 scopes with this feature. Didn't see any listed on SWFA. What are they for and are there problems? I like the clean look and presumably solid mount.

they discontinued the rail mount I believe.  Zeiss even has a few.

It's more of a European idea and I think it's lost popularity there.

They are still available but only in the illuminated version, mounting system works great. But its going to be very costly to get mounts for your rifle. Blaser and Sauer are the only two companys I know off that make their own mounts for a rail mount scope

it's quite good for mounting. fix, and straight up.
it's mostly for break-action rifles, but some of them (blaser...) uses them for normal bolt action rifles also.
