It means the scope has a 6x zoom range, i.e. the highest magnification is 6 times the lowest magnification... ex: 1-6X, 2-12X, 3-18X...

PC no need to feel that way.
This question comes up more often than you think. It is called an erector. Each one has a number that is associated with the magnification range, like Ted (Rifledude) said. The 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and now 10X erectors are being implemneted. Allowing scopes to have a great amount of versatility in magnification. It's a good question. Kudos to Rifledude for the great answer.
