I recently bought my first gun, a Rock River Arms Operator 2 AR-15. I've always been interested in shooting and I'm finally fortunate enough to have my own. I also bought an eotech 517, and I definitely love it thus far. After buying my first, I'm looking to get in to the sport and acquiring different types of weapons. Shortly after I bought my eotech I remembered that a good friend's father works for Zeiss. I asked him about what he could get for me and what would be good for my AR. The only thing the father had on hand that he said would be good for my setup was a zeiss diavari 1.25-4x24 mc, brand new in box. I've been doing some research on scopes and so far haven't had much luck. Now my first question was whether this scope would actually be beneficial to me with my weapon. Second was whether it would be wise to spend what he was asking for it, $500. Keep in mind I'm looking to expand my weapon collection and if others here felt it was a good buy but maybe wasn't right for my AR, should I get it anyway. One of the ranges I frequent has 100, 200, and 300yd targets. I was also wondering if someone could point me in the right direction of a website that is informative on scopes. For example what the numbers represent, brand reviews, etc to help me get an understanding of things. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the OT!
A new Diavari for $500????That is top of the line & a fantastic scope.Buy it & if you don't like it call me & I,ll give you $750. Seriously listen to him you will never loose money on that piece & it will work OK on your AR.The clarity of the glass will absolutly amaze you.Buy if for no other reason to put it on your next rifle build. As far as ranking of scopes go,it's like asking rankings of trucks. To many variables, more like personal taste.Stick around on this sight & you will become very educated on scopes. We are fortunate to have in house engineers that work for a living in the field of glass & their uses, people like Ilya[the DLO]These people also do alot of scope testing so people like you & I don't have to waste our time. A very good site which will get you started & answer many of your questions is opticthoughts.com |

If you are talking about those numbers, they just mean that the scope magnifies from 1.25 times to 4 times and the number 24 just means it has a 24mm objective bell. This is a great sight to learn about optics, you ought to take a look over in the FAQ section of the forum, there are some good articles there as well. |

Most of the time to get a deal like that you need either a knife or a gun. I would be all over that.

Well I bought the scope and I've decided to stick with the Eotech 517 I currently have. I'm going to sell it and try to buy the eotech 3x magnifier. If anyone is interested I put it up for sale on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/120992025288?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

As someone who has spent a small fortune playing the AR15 optical rodeo..
I would strongly suggest rethinking that.. I don't know very many who has tried the 3x flip to side and stuck with it long term. It's no where close to being as good as a decent scope and you have a GREAT scope. I would suggest a good quick release mount for the scope (Larue, American Defense, Bobro) and switch between optics when needed or keep it for a different gun or upper.. Like, if you got say a 6.8 SPC upper for hunting. Keep that Zeiss, I can guarantee you if you sold it to fund that magnifier, down the road you will be kicking yourself. |
