I've budgeted about $300 for a scope and about $100 for a scope mount for my .223 AR-15. Judging by what I have seen this Leupold Mark AR tactical rifle scope runs for around $380 with a SWFA S.S.A.L.T. Scope Mount. I was wondering whether or not this would be decent scope for the price and if I could have any other rifle scope and mount combination that would be better. I will be shooting at targets 50-100 yards away until I find another range around the area. I would like to be able to shoot up to 300-400 yards away. Also, I have looked at the SS 6x40 scope and found it appealing to me. Any thoughts or advise would be appreciated.

I would NOT try to talk you out of the SWFA 6x42SS. My suspicion is that many folks think the 6x doesn't have enough magnification, but I think otherwise. I've shot with mine to 1000 yards and could see 30cal impacts in dry dirt at that distance.

Both are good scope for your M4.

But for target shooting, I'd have to say the SS would suite the best. The mil-quad is exceptional easy to use. And will make DOPEing your target a more pleasuable experience, b/c the turrets match the reticle.

I'd read Duece's(CF II) post on how to sight in a mil/mil scope.

100yds is easy in your price range and for your budget a Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40 would be a nice choice. For 300yds you'll probably want more magnification and you could do a lot worse at than a Weaver Classic V16 4-16x42. What it does not have are target turrets. I've used the Weaver V series and like them but I don't own the Buckmasters so I can't say how they compare. These are all hunting scopes rather than target scopes but that's what you get for $300.

The Burris P.E.P.R. mount is no LaRue Tactical but the QD version is pretty decent and has the quick disconnect system. I have no idea how repeatable it is when removed and replaced however.

Leupold Mark AR would have been a wonderful two hundred dollar scope.

For $300, you should be looking at 6x42 or 10x42 SS.

Should I purchase a 6x magnification or the 10x42 SS scope to see the bullet holes at 100 yards?

30cal holes are visible with the 6x, but you'll need more x to see 22cal.

I purchased the 10x42 MRAD SS scope and the Burris P.E.P.R mount. Just waiting for it to arrive now.

I have no experience with the dismounting of a removable carry handle and the internet seems to be of no use to me. Can anyone help so I can mount on my scope tomorrow?
