Opus Dei asked:
"Plugged into a UPS, it ought to be OK, no?" Interesting question... first off, the tare thing isn't much of a problem. Second, UPSs have been known to cause problems for delicate electronics, as their output is often closer to a square wave, than a sine wave. I've had all kinds of doodads plugged into UPSs w/out issues; suppose it depends on the UPS. |

Now I'm torn... Pro-30 or Pro-50? It's about 460 vs 770 grains.
Twice the money, but more weight capacity and that little plate that I'm guessing centers the cup. |

Hello dude..I was using a bullet scale that study to 0.1 feed but I did not discover that quality sufficient for the job. This one flows to .02 feed, and performs better for me...bullet scale i think best for the measurement of the bullets..whats your opinion??

For powder a scale accurate to 0.02grains will detect and reflect a single kernel of powder... the reality of it is that a volumetric cup is usually more than accurate enough and Velocity tracks +/- 50fps or better using cups.

budperm - so what your saying is proper use of a dip is just as good as the variance of a few tenthswouldequate to roughly +/- 50 or so fps??? yes/no???

Pretty much YES for the majority of us shooters that aren't deep into Bench Rest one holing. As long as your consistant in your cup filling process you should be able to maintain sub MOA groups with capable equipment and proper technique. That of course implies using bullets and powders your equipment likes. Sorting brass by weight and properly prepping it and even sorting bullets by weight will all help decrease group size too.
The fun is in the playing and finding the "perfect load" Thruth be told Operator Error usually fights finding that every step of the way...
A buddy has a fancy benchrest with hydraulic trigger pull. I put a couple of my guns on it and found out that I was responsible for about half of the group sizes I was used to getting (avg 0.75" dropped to avg 0.38" group size when I wasn't pulling the trigger myself). Consistancy is paramount!

0.001 what, grains? A scale accurate to 0.02gr will resolve a single kernel of powder... Why would you need anything more accurate? With a scale accurate to 0.02gr you can have confidence in repeatable measurements to 0.3grains. Remember, most all digital scales average several readings and display a rounded number. Thats why some scales seem to drift in the lowest digit with all else steady.

I knocked the HA- 30 to the floor and broke it, several days ago. It was such a great scale, I'll buy another, or similar.
I've learned to depend on its accuracy and have stopped bothering to check initial powder/load setup with another scale. My complacency almost lead to disaster. It now displays weight about 75% lighter than true weight. Days after dropping the scale (plenty of time to forget about it,) I started to load a batch of .45 Colt with 250 gr. cast RNFP over 8 gr. of Unique. My Blackhawks have thrived on that load with similar bullets since the late 70's. I loaded a few, getting the seat depth and crimp just right and proceeded, but something didn't look right... too much powder in the cases? I re- checked the load on another scale- 14 grs. Unique. My experienced eye saved my bacon, but forgetfulness and complacency almost did me in. I'd like to blame the freaky- flukeys, but it was me, all along. Considering some of the rugged ground where I like to go out and shoot my Blackhawks, they might not have found my bones for decades. |
