Main use 100 - 300 yds

Most hunting will be done right before dark

Ability to count horns is highest priority.

Price range 800 to 1000

A friend was saving up for a z6 and life happened.

Things that come to mind:

Swaro z3
Bushnell Elite 6500

SVT, honestly not trying to start a pissing match.....but why hashes, dots, etc for a max range of 300 yards?   A simple Conquest in 4.5-14 or 3.5-10x44, VX3 3.5-10x40/50, witch a duplex would be more than enough.

I would choose a z3 over the conquest. At least to me the z3 is optically clearer and brighter. I would probably chose the z3 3-10 with the 4a reticle for his needs.

You can't go wrong with the z3, its a fantastic scope. I have an earlier AH swaro and it is hands down my favorite scope.

you'll need at least 12x on the top end to count antlers at 300yds with good glass.  With most shots being before dark that zeiss will get you the best chance to being able to do all that at that yardage.  Plus by purchasing a zeiss you get entered into this http://www.opticstalk.com/win-a-10000-tophy-whitetail-hunt_topic33072.html

Me If it were my money the zeiss would be head this way

I have the 4-12X50 Z3 and it would be a fine choice for your type of hunting, as long as the reticle isn't too thin for your tastes.

The Duralyt recommendation, however, is golden. I wouldn't hesitate to try that one in your shoes.

I would have chimed in earlier, but I read the thread title, and thought this was a Viagra spammer. ;)
