Need more than a 9 mag 40mm is just fine as is a 1 inch tube. Plain jane plex with no bells and whistles as well as an "in" country warranty customer service. For hunting only- no paper punching target time.

There you go. Also, welcome to the forum. For $50 more you can really get over 9x, and with great glass. Plus, I love the Zeiss #4 reticle, especially for low light hunting: http://www.samplelist.com/Zeiss-45-14x44-Conquest-Rifle-Scope-DEMO-B-P58473.aspx |

And by the way, don't be afraid of SWFA's sample list. Demo-B items are near flawless. I have bought the 4.5-14x50 w/hunting turrets as a demo-B and it's perfect. The glass is so much better than my viper HS that at 14x, I can see holes on my 100yd zero target better than the vortex at 16x I bought brand new. I would guess that the 10x version will do everything you need out to 3-400 yds and then some. Good luck.

Looks nice but will break the ol' fixed income budget. Is that a "seconds" scope or something? Anything else? |

The first one is in your budget and anything else in your price range would be a step down IMO. Also they are not seconds. Click on the link and they discuss what the classifications mean. I would not hesitate to purchase one if I was in the market for a scope that was on the sample list. |

What kind of scope(s) have you been using? I find that better glass is way better than more magnification in a cheaper scope with poorer quality glass. The Zeiss has very nice glass especially for the money and is something that you would never have to upgrade.

I bought the Vortex 4-16x44 HS once and liked most things about it, however if your main reason for needing more magnification is poor eyes, then I would tend to steer you away from it due to the thin reticle. I had a really hard time seeing it at low light.
I know it is over your stated budget, but I settled on the Ziess 4.5-14x44 conquest with the rapid Z-800 reticle. I can't say enough good things about this scope. I purchased it as a Demo-b with no complaints.
My dad had this one:
I know there are those on here who think Leupolds are overprised, but it is under budget and I have used it in low light and the reticle shows up well. Leupold also has good customer service.
Here's another one:
Good Luck

That Sightron Big Sky 3-12 X 42 listed above is a VERY nice scope. It would do exactly what you are looking for.
