Ted makes very good points about factory rifles being mass produced, therefore, all of them benefit from simple trigger adjustments, bedding or other minor tuning techniques. The 700 is also the most copied custom action out there today, with virtually every maker to the point where even their actions have drop-in replacement parts compatable with every bolt on part available to the 700 market.

If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

Correct, Roy. The aftermarket is directly influenced by sales volume of the item being customized.
Items that sell well get all the aftermarket love. |

Stock design like a Monte Carlo style will lower "felt" "perceived" over some of the other designs. A mark v which has a true Monte Carlo stock design in a 300 wby is easier on the shoulder than a 7mm 700 at least IMHO. ;)

I didn't know that Remington made a 5 lb 700 in 7mm Mag.

The exceptions to sakomato's experience I would say are the 700 SS and the older-style 20" bbl. LTRs. The LTR that I had came with an H-S stock and the old-style 40X grooved trigger. It really was fine out of the box, although I later added a DBM and a cheekpiece.
I decided to go the full custom route but a guy might consider a Sako or Savage.

Again, it all depends on your anatomy... how long your neck is, whether you have square or sloping shoulders, shoulder width, etc. It also depends on recoil pad area, thickness, material it's made from, amount of compliance, and on and on... I find a more straight stock that directs recoil straight back against my shoulder is more comfortable for heavy recoil than Monte Carlo types...for me. |

Anyone making that statement Ted, hasn't shot both. Heck, the recoil from the Roy feels quite a bit more than my 300 Win Mag.

My 2 cents: I bought a Rem on the believe that it would be an off-the-shelf shooter and spare me the misery of having to deal with a gunsmith.
Well, the only thing left of the original rifle is the action and the stock. And I am told by experts that the stock is also crap, to much flex.
So the Rem 700 action is the only part that everyone still says is very good.
I paid $2000 for the rifle, $100 for a skim bedding, $120 for a trigger and $1000 for a new barrel (Inclusive of gunsmith work- barrel blank is $500)
So what could I have bought for $3220 ???
Will I buy another Rem? No, not for precision shooting.

I'm glad my experiences have been different. I've never had one that wasn't a "shooter"... Of course, I only have one now (I think), the Etronx. But, since the Ellis Optics fire, I also only have one Winchester M70...

Anyone keep their favorite car stock ...probably not ...Why - personalizing is fun and sets you and /or your vehicle apart , plus if properly set up can improve performance .. Same with rifles .. From the factory may work well enough , but if your subscribing to this forum , I feel safe in assuming that modifying your firearms is ..well ...fun |

I lost ALL my mean spirited, yucky gunz in a boating accident. Yeah, really. I escaped with only my life and my Obama "Change" poster still in tact..... |

Most of us Big Green fans where as shocked as 8 with what happened to his rifle. But they did make it up to him.
On the other hand, I've known some to always performed well. |
