I was astonished, dumbfounded really when I saw the gallery post of Ron Allen who reported taking the deer in his photo with a .17HMR rimfire. What in God's name was he thinking carrying, aiming and firing on a medium sized game animal with a .17 rimfire?? Talk about irresponsible hunting practices. That just about tops them all. In most states it's illegal to carry rimfires, or centerfires .22cal and under for big game season for that matter. Even if it was, one has to consider the sheer physics of the matter. I hate the mentality of "if you hit it right you can kill a grizzly bear with a straw and spitwad", well hell you can probably kill an elk with a slingshot too, but it's simply not wise nor fair to the game animals that would be wounded and never harvested to use a firearm not suitable of consistent clean kills in the majority of the cases. Those .17 rimfires may have mega-velocity and trajectory performance but face it people, if you agree that it's prudent to utilize such cartridge agaist anything larger than a squirrel then you must be as big a moron as the one I saw posted. I'd be totally embarrased to admit such a taking, say nothing of advertise it on a website. I don't think it shows very good tact for the webmaster of the SWFA site to allow that post to remain up as it more or less implies that a major firearms accessory distributor condones such action. What a shame.

Welcome to The OT!!
Wow, you really got going there. For the record, I don't agree with all hunting practices I see, hear and read about either.
As far as the managerial style of SWFA's site is concerned, that's the way they roll.
We here are pretty much at liberty to discuss or share anything and everything we deem important or of interest, without SWFA moderating us to death like so many "lesser" talk forums. And we, the forum members, appreciate the freedom that we have here. SWFA does have cool moderators, but we are mostly left to moderate ourselves.
I appreciate your position and your post, Sir.

Well, that is a good thing that this is a forum that doesn't moderate it's posts into oblivion. It's true, the irresponsible act was that of the fellow in the photo and not SWFA. I just found it bit odd that it got approved. I would hope that if I subitted a photo in which I described the scene as: "My NYS northern zone doe taken during archery season with a shotgun loaded with 00buckshot" would be declined for posting as it would be describing no less than 3 illegal practices. Or how about: "My NYS deer taken during muzzleloading season with a mini-14 laoded with a 30rnd magazine." Theres another 3 game law violations.
But anyways, seems like a cool place to post sans any lil' Hitlers running around deleting stuff. Thanks! |

We agree with you fully. We in no way condone taking animals inhumanly or illegally. Upon reading this email the picture was immediately removed from our page.
The process of approving these entries isn't exactly full proof. There are two main things that are checked for when being approved. One is that an optic of some sort is pictured. Second is to make sure the submitter is in our system as purchasing the optics from us. Yes we show some leniency and let some be submitted that aren't eligible. These few are not considered when choosing the contest finalist. When so many pictures are submitted every story accompanied with the picture isn't read as it should be. We will now screen every entry thoroughly to prevent further instances.
Thanks for the heads up. I don't see how nor why anyone would ever want to hunt a deer with a .17. Does anyone know if there are any states where it is legal to take deer with a .17 cal?

Well, glad to know someone else found that a bit odd as well. The following link should prove interesting:
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/annual/hunt/means/ I'll highlight the first paragraph for those not interested in following the link: it's from the Texas hunting regulations page and reads: "Means and Methods: Firearms:Game animals and game birds may be hunted with any legal firearm, EXCEPT:
