How corrupt do you think a goverment can be?

Close your eyes and imagine some banana republic ripping it big time. Now multiply that thought by 10. You are still not close.

Below is a summary of the latest findings into the goings on with the local goverment for Johannesburg, once one of the richest cities in South Africa.

Read it and weep for us!!

The problem with democracies is the people who participate in them at election time, but ignore them the rest of the time. They are unaware of what the politicians are doing with tax monies, or what laws are being passed. They fail to find out what their rights are, or understand them. People are lazy and come campaign time, they only listen to 2 minute news stories that are written by biased reporters, because they don't want to take the time to learn the real, and whole truth. This gives politicians the opportunity to take advantage of the people and theit taxes. The politicians try to expand their own power over the people and increase their own wealth at the expense of the people. An elementary teacher once told me that there are politicians, and there are statesmen. The difference is; a politician works for himself, and a statesman works for the benefit of the people.
Benjamin Franklin was asked, "What kind of government have you given us?". He replied, "A Republic, but it is up to you to keep it".
We get the government that we deserve, and if you don't pay attention and DEMAND accountability, then you are nothing more than future  slave.

Beltfed, so true.
At this stage we have an illiterate eloctrate who are easily swayed by promises. They also see the wealth of others as something to be coveted, nevermind how it was aquired. So the very govt official who stole and plundered is admired for his wealth. A fat person is a sign of wealth, not poor health in this country.

8, do whites have much of a voice in goverment and media in S.A. now? How many major political parties do you have, and who do they represent?

For all the crap we have a pretty good democratic society.
The media and press are very free and print a lot of stuff about the ruling goverment. So much so that the ANC are trying to bring in new secrecy laws and gag the media. Fortunately their attemps has failed thus far.
We also have about 13 different political parties. The strongest being the Democratic Alliance, which is mostly white electorate. The ANC has about 62% of the votes, the DA about 25% and the rest split among amongst the also wannabe's

Unfortunately in the 62% the ANC is pretty strong and only need one other ally to get things passed etc.

I have some bad news for you Wouter, your democracy is going down the toilet, like ours.
Your only hope is that the media may be unbiased for now, and you may be able to get some of the other parties to allie or merge with the Democratic Alliance Party to increase your strength against a corrupt party.

I think the ANC merged with Joseph Stalin back in the 1940s.  I would be thinking about sending my money to a Swiss bank and nonchalantly taking a long holiday to Geneva....and the US Embassy.

I spoke to a good friend of mine who is running an international company. He spends most of his time in other African countries.
I asked his opinion of South Africa as viewed from afar....his response was that the rest of Africa (which is pretty stuffed up) is ahead of South Africa....they allready are where we are heading for !!!
