Hello everybody,
I finally decided to sell my Bushnell Elite 6500 DOA 600.
However cannot decide between the Viper PST and SIII.
The new scope is to shoot at 1000 yards with Kimber Advanced Tactical 308.
Please help.

I have a couple of S-III's and really like them.
In the end, get what you want.

I'm 70% inclined towards Viper because of its reticle.  And it's first focal plane, which I didn't know what it was until I read, that in any magnification the dimensions of the reticle are the same.  Whereas with SIII according to their literature the dimensions differ based on the magnification.
Above image is PST, Below is SIII.

If the FFP is important to you then the Viper is a good scope. I too like the reticle.

I'm not really clear on the FFP vs. SFP concept.
Isn't it better  for the calculation sake to have FFP especially for target shooting?  or am I missing something?

Describe the kind of shooting you plan to do at distance?
Bench?
Prone?
Roving at multiple distances under time?
Reticle ranging in comp conditions?

target shooting at 1000 yards bench and prone.  And possibly with developed skills roving at multiple distances and yes under timed pressure.
Weapon is 308 bolt.

If you are primarily planning to shoot at known distances, get the S3.

If you plan to shoot at unknown distances where you have to estimate range, get the PST FFP.

All that having been said, if you want a FFP scope, you should also look at the somewhat more expensive SWFA SS 5-20x50.

I like that scope enough to put one on my 338LM.

In this price range I would definitely get the S3 even though it is SFP. The glass is just one class better than in the Vipers.

That is the point that I was going to make. The SIII with 6-24 has better clarity than the PST, If this was a comparison with the 4-16's I would say it's anyone fight.

I agree with Ilya, the SS is the better value. Lot's of great features that are standard, rather than add on options that are typically more expensive.

I have never owned SIII so I'll take ur word for it.

But, I dont agree with the statement that SIii has more features than PST. For one thing PST has IR SIII doesnt, SIII reticle is only 30 MOA adjustment whereas PST is more than 35 MOA.

Do you plan to shoot off of the reticle or dial?

For 1K shooting, I would just dial, for roving field matches, I use the reticle, and dial off the reticle so I am always shooting on a line.
30 versus 35 MOA in the reticle is not a big deal either way to me.

I prefer the SFP since it covers less of the target.

Do u fellas think 4-16x50 would be sufficient for target shooting at or beyond 1000 yd?

I prefer the SFP since it covers less of the target.

That really depends on the reticle design, of course.  I've seen some rather coarse SFP reticle and rather thin FFP reticles.  Personally, I lean toward bolder reticle patterns, so many SFP retic

For example, a 0.1mrad floating dot covers up 3.6 inches at 1000 yards.  That has yet to hinder my shooting.

Most top notch FFP scopes for long range shooting have reticles with thin lines in the 0.05 to 0.1 mrad range.  That is plenty thin for anything I might do.
