First post, long time lurker.
I received my SWFA SS 10x42 (non-HD model) yesterday and moved her into her new home; an AD-RECON-SL mount from American Defense Manufacturing, on top of a Savage Arms Model 11 "Hog Hunter" (Savage's designation, not mine. I have no intention of hunting any hogs.) chambered in .308 Winchester. I had to remove the rear sight blade in order for the scope to have enough clearance. Safely stored in the stock, the rear sight could be returned to it's place quickly, and with only a flat head screwdriver. I don't usually care for being a walking advertisement, but, if I'd known I was going to be an instant fan, I would have ordered a hat and some stickers at the same time!!! SWFA will have my business for the foreseeable future. Shipping was fast and timely, communication was excellent, having various payment options was convenient. I called to confirm that my online order had been processed and the customer service was courteous, professional, helpful, and provided accurate information. And that was all before opening the package. This scope is exactly what I was looking for, at the price I wanted to pay. This is my first tactical type scope (and yes, I learned to range with a mildot system BEFORE ordering a mil dot reticle scope), and it truly is a different animal than the 3-9x40 hunting type scopes I've used in the past. Very impressed with the company and the product! Only minor complaint, there was no instruction manual of any kind in the box, not even the old Tasco branded one I've read some folks receive. It's okay though, there is more than enough information online. Enough talk, picture: This is the mounted scope, with the SWFA sunshade and Butler Creek flip-up caps. |

Welcome to Optics Talk.
Nice looking rig, indeed. Thanks for sharing. My OLD 10x42mm SS has served me well for many years. Even with all the other optics that have came and went, it, (and my Aimpoint T1) are still probably my favorites. No fuss, no muss....just throw it on and go shoot.

So let it be written, so let it be done... Wouldn't it be nice if there were more optics like that??? |

I sent my SS to another forum member here to check out. He put it in his rings and on his rifle, shot it a bit, reset the dials to their previous settings, boxed it up and sent it back to me.
I threw it back on my 700 and Badger rings to rezero at 100 yds at my local rifle range. Never touched the dials.... Wouldn't you know, I set up and shot a cold bore shot and the very first round down range blows the center out of the bulls eye. Just another day for the old gal....

VERY NICE set up!
I'll give Savage one thing for sure. They pay attention to what firearms hunters seem to want. Although with the "Hog Hunter" I find the selection of chamberings strange. .223,.308,and .338 mag? Not that any wouldn't work.

They'll get an instruction manual out eventually. Thankfully, there is enough info on the Internet and at this forum to get me started. I managed to unscrew my caps and set my zeros without screwing anything up yesterday!!

In regard to that, I was wondering if, when you have unscrewed the set screws and aligned the zero s on the caps with the indicators on the body and are ready to retighten the set screws, would you want to press and hold the turret down while retightening? I've noticed that the turrets can be pushed down a bit, but sort of pop back up about a millimeter, unless they are held down. I did it both ways, and it seemed to work, but I'm wondering if one or the other is the prescribed method.

When you push down, it is probably just compressing the o-ring on the spindle a bit. Either way is fine, as long as the turret"hat", is seated on the spindle.

What scope base and rings are you running?
Also, do you know if that is considered the "round" or "flat" rear receiver on the Hog Hunter? Reason is that mine is due in tomorrow and I need to get the base and ring setup. Thanks in advance. Thinking of running a Larue QD mount..maybe |
