What is better optically?
The Vortex 2.5-10x44: http://swfa.com/Vortex-25-10x44-Viper-HS-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P48288.aspx or the Zeiss 3-9x40 http://swfa.com/Zeiss-3-9x40-Conquest-Rifle-Scope-P608.aspx |

Prolly this one:
Seriously, assuming you're talking about the Viper HS, I have the Zeiss 3-9 and the Vortex Viper HS 4-16, and they are very, very close optically. Probably give the edge to the vortex, but only slightly. Reticles are certainly different, and if I was consistently in low-light, I'd probably go with the Zeiss #4. |

The Zeiss has the better glass.
The Vortex is a nice overall scope.

At that power, 10x and below, the vortex should be optically near identical to the zeiss, at least to my eyes and you have the option of getting one with a ffp reticle. Anything at the range of 16x+ magnification though, the vortex gets that hazy image though from the reflection of light bouncing off the inner objective bell tube. Must be a design flaw but i'm no optics expert so don't take my word for it.
Anyway whatever scope you choose at that magnification range zeiss or vortex, you can't go wrong with either. Over 16x mag, the zeiss would have a big advantage when it comes to image.

The vortex has more than enough elev and windage adjustment range to reach more than 200 yards.
However the model u have selected doesn't have parallax adjustment, it is set at 100 yards. IMO u won't be parallax free bellow 100 yards. |

Same thing with zeiss, it says parallax free 100 yd, IMO beyond that u can't adjust it.

You are correct, both of these scopes have factory set parallax somewhere around 100yards (the actual parallax free distance varies a bit).
That does not mean that they are not usable at other distances. ILya

When the parallax is set at 100 yd on a scope w/o par adjustment, can use the scope par free lets say at 50 yd? Or how would one adjust it when the distance is above or below the parallax set distance? |

Make sure your eye is optically centered in the exit pupil. Even without a parallax adjustment if you are shooting properly you can greatly limit parallax error by proper eye placment.
Ask the guys that shoot the SS 3-9x from 0 to 800 plus yards. They do it all the time and are not seeing the error when done correctly. Parallax is not a huge issue until you hit about 11x and above anyway. That is why most scopes 10x and below do not have that adjustment. Also for typical hunting and shooting distances parallax error will not even be noticeable. Most factory rifles and ammo are probably not good enough to make the error consistent and noticeable. For shooting out to 200 yards with a 10x scope it will likely never be any kind of issue. |

supertool,
in ur opinion do uthink 3-10 mag is sufficient to shoot at 800 yd? If not then what would be sufficient mag? |

I think it depends a lot on what you are shooting at and how good your eyes are. 10x at 800 yards is only going to be a little better than what an object looks like through the naked eye at 100 yards. I personally would want greater magnification at 800 yards. |

I used a fixed 10x on my .308 for quite a while. It actually worked very well for out to 1000 yards. But ultimately I like having more than that, I may not use much over 10x because of mirage issues, but it is nice to be able to get a closer view for sure. I typically run my variable from 10x to 12x for most of my shooting with my precision rifle. IMO a perfect mag range for a .308 would be a 3-15x50. 15x is plenty IMO for the distances I shoot a .308 and it would give me 3x on the bottom end which occasionally is a nice thing to have. Its better to have it and not need it than wish you had more.
I use the SS 5-20x on my .308. Only because there is not a SS 3-15x though. Hopefully they will have one at some point and I will trade to that one as I would prefer less on the bottom end that 5x. |

I have never shot comps, but I would think that would fit the role pretty well. |
