I have acquired my first 17HMR in the flavor of a Marlin XT17-VSL and have been looking for THE scope to mate it to. Only preference I seek is to squeeze every bit of effective range out of those little slugs from ten yards on out. Biggest bang for the buck while being sensible about number of bucks involved. I'm a believer that you get what you pay for, and that good things aren't cheap and cheap things are never good. Will a 3-9x get me out there or 4.5-16x or even a 6.5-24x be better? AO and side focus would be handy. A silver finish would be great but Matte is fine.
Can you find me a dance partner? |

Welcome to Optics Talk.
How much do you have to spend? Shooting critters, paper, or both? If both, which is primary?

I'll want to spend what I need to get the right scope matched to the rifle. I dont have an upper limit
***within reason***. I want the best scope to take to the field, but I don't want to pay for a name just so I can say I have a "XYZ widget scope", ya know? Critters over rabid paper, say 70/30 split toward Critters. Gopher size to coyote. Will be dawn and dusk used along with daylight, so light transmission is critical. |

I use a Leupold 3-9 EFR on my 17HMR and have been very pleased with it.

Sorry so slow in acknowledging the offerings and the work in getting the info to me. I appreciate the suggestions and will probably go with the Sightron when I get a chance to crunch the numbers. Again, I appreciate the help!

.17HMR was my first gun and I've tried a few scopes on it. size wise 3-9x32, 3-9x40, 4-12x40 and a 6x24x50 AO.
A fine recticle is nice, you can get away with lower magnification, at night or in low light that might make it harder to see the crosshairs of course. I also like the low 3x or 4x magnification because I find a lot of my shooting is quite close and to have a 6x bottom magnification can make those closer shots harder than they need to be. Something to consider. If you're shooting gopher at 100 yards a 4-12 is the size to go for, if you're shooting gopher out past that, get a more powerful scope. |

On my Marlin 17V, I just changed from a cheapo 4-12x40 to a Leupold VX-2 6-18x40.
It has AO. I like it, though its eye relief has a fairly narrow range. Interestingly, the Leupold LRV duplex kind of works for 17HMR at 100 and 200 yards.

I had that 3-9 X 36 AO Sightron Big Sky on my Browning T Bolt .17 HMR. It's a very nice scope.

Hey..I hate to say it..but I will.
I have several high quality scopes on my long guns...Leupy Mk 4, for one. I just bought the Mueller APV from SWFA..4.5-14 AO scope. I put it up against my Weaver V7 and frankly, I like the Mueller very much. It is at least as good as the Weaver if not better in my opinion. I know it is made in China. The Weaver in Japan. I was going to roll the dice on the Mueller because for a very inexpensive scope I read mostly good things. I have to agree it is well worth what I paid. I am mounting on a new CZ 455 in .17 HMR. I will report on this once I get her all set up and zeroed. So far I am impressed with this scope. Cost notwithstanding. I like my Mark 4, of course and the Weaver Grand Slam as well as my Vortex Viper PST. But I am not unhappy at all with this Mueller. |
