I was looking at the

wonder optics 4-14
hawke sidewinder 4-16 or 4-14
vortex viper hs lr 4-16x44
falcon menace 4-14
nikon monarch 4-16 or 5-20
millet trs-1

I don't really like the nikon only because it has only around 40moa of adjustment.
this scope will be used for hunting around 500 yards when i get good enough and i hope to get out to 1000

Dont you just hate when someone throws a little bit or reality into a perfectly good plan.   ERRRR   $550 + 500 to 1000 yds =  No No

if it were my $ on the list, it would be the vortex. WO, millet, and the falcon tend to be junk. the hawke is supposed to be ok, and the nikon will be a good scope, but their CS, and warranty dept, blow. the vortex HS has good glass, repeatable, and the best CS/warranty in the business.

These scopes would do the 500 to 1000 if you do your part but they are not a typical hunting scope

This is more like a hunting type scope but doubt it will get you past 600 yds but call SWFA and ask what they think.

In the Vortex line this would be way better than the HS version at longer distances where you will need to adjust windage.

Try the Pentax 6-24x50 Lightseeker-30. I was amazed at the clarity of this glass. some have said the glass is made from the same optical plant as the high end Burris. I love my Bushnell Tactical in the same magnification but the Pentax is clearer in my opinion. $509 free shipping no tax from Buy.com.

Great scope ---- 500 to 1000 yds -- one inch tube ---  Not Likely, but still a great scope for the hunting most guys do out to 300 possibly 400 yds.

ExcellentThanks for posting your success with this scope it is not one I had considered but should get in under the price point and with 65moa should work especially with a plus 20 moa rail.

I also like the reticle on the PST better for windage use.  I have this Viper PST on one of my rigs right now.

However, the Viper HS has 8 MOA of windage holds on the reticle, and that will get you 800 - 900 yards of holds in a 10mph wind depending on load.

The HS also has the advantage of getting you further with one rotation with the coarser 1/2MOA elevation clicks.

As a real-world long range rig (500-600 yards), the Viper HS has a nice feature set, and offers a lot of value.

The PST will work as a 1000 yard setup a little better.

Hippie   I want to shoot a thousand yards.

ShockedJust angle the rifle up a few degrees and pull the trigger.

Hippie  I want to hunt at 500 yds.

Shocked Ok but when you get ready to shoot walk closer try for 200 to 300 yd shots so the wind doesnt cause you so much trouble.
Jerry Springer

Really the used Zeiss 4.5-14 with the Rapid Z800 reticle would be a good choice.
