All of these use reticle holdover to get out to 800 yards. It will only work on the highest power since they are second focal plane. If you want to use the knobs to adjust or prefer a first focal plane scope then I will have to re-evaluate my reccomendations. With what you have told us this is a short list that I could make a lot longer.
I believe this Swarovski only goes out to around 750 with the 300 Wm.

Welcome to OT, Elkoholic! What are your realistic average shot distances? I've been on a lot of elk hunting trips and have talked to a lot of my fellow elk hunters. Even in wide open elk country, a typical shot is likely to be half your stated max distance at most... and shorter. If at all possible, you should attempt to close that distance as much as terrain and conditions permit. I would gear up with the majority of shot opportunities in mind (likely 100 - 400 yds), not the once in a blue moon shot. Hornady Superformance (or any factory ammo) |

It will work if you either zero at a longer range, or drop the magnification a little bit. |

If you are super confident now at those ranges, I recommend you get exactly the same optic you have on your super confident gun.
I hunt allot and am almost never comfortable with an 800 yard shot. I can recommend lots of optics (will be in Africa in 4 weeks with my trusty 300WM) but clarification would help. Why super performance 165s, does he gun love that ammo? Ballistics will favor a longer, heavier bullet, especially at those ranges. I say get another of what you shoot now. Confidence is the name of the game, and confidnce at 800 yards is invaluable Edited by Rancid Coolaid - June/04/2012 at 17:50 |

I am just curious what scope you selected on the last go round and what the current rifle is. Here again a tad more info might be helpful as some guys are very brand loyal and I can think of a few scopes in each line that could realistically make consistent hits at that distance so long as the shooter did their part. Also I would probably not select the 165 Horniday so long as Winchester is making their excellent XP3 180 gr bullet which seems to retain energy very well at longer distances. I tend to shoot the 190 gr bullets with good success from my 300 WM but I hand load them. Do give the XP3 a try though it has a ballistic coefficient of .527 and tends to be correct for the twist in most 300 WM rifles.

Not sure what your thoughts on the Ziess are,but...if you interested in using a hold over reticle that will get you out to 800yds the rapid-z 800 will fill the bill. There are also several of the 4.5-14x44's on the simple list right now for $650. There is also a nifty calculator on the Ziess web site that will give you your optimum power setting and zero yardage to make the sub tensions the most accurate. It just makes the SPF scope work for you. That would give you the other half of your budget for practice or gear. If you want to max out your stated limit the he SWFA 5-20 mentioned earlier would be my pick. Kind of depends on whether you want to turn knobs or use the reticle. The SWFA is available in both illuminated and non illuminated version's.
There are a lot of very experienced people here, much more than I. If given all the variables you will get lots of suggestions that will work. Good luck. |
