Need a little help deciding on a scope.

Used for hunting  50 - 200 yards, dangerous  game -Sako 85 .338 federal

Currently looking hard at:

Leupold  VX3  1.5-5X20  1"

Weaver  Super Slam  1-5X24  30mm

Nikon  African  1.1-4X24  30mm

Has anyone have experience with these?

Not really interested in illuminated reticles.

Thanks in advance.

You might want to add Trijicon to the mix.

I'd add this to the mix due to it's fast target acquisition reticle.

I forgot to ask.  What "dangerous game" are we talking here?

I like the Trijicon Scopes with the red post with illuminated triangle but you need to pay close attention to the eye relief that a scope has
this one has more than the others and once you get past the large objective you get to enjoy the fact that it is exceptionally bright in low light even at 10x it is a 5.6mm exit eye pupil.

I'll be looking at european boar and bear, possibly a cat.

Trying to keep FOV expanded and the glass bulletproof.

Surprised no one has recommended the SS 1-6x, especially with the current deal on.

I have a 1.5-5 Leupold and it is a solid scope. That particular model has been known as a great DG scope.

I was told the 1.5-5x leupold was the scope all other DG scopes are judged.

I think I'm leaning that way.

Was really interested in opinions of the Weaver & Nikon.

I have had good luck with both Weaver and Nikon scopes. But they weren't the ones you are looking at. I have read good things about the Nikon, though.

For fast action shooting I like the 1-4x22 Meopta Meostar and the Trijicon 1-4x24 Accupoint with German #4 green green dot in that order. Meostar has a huge uncluttered FOV and is VERY fast for me. The Leupold is rugged, but lacks FOV compared to the above.

However............... Trust me if you plan to boar hunt you need an illuminated reticle and preferably a 40mm objective MINIMUM. You just don't shoot big boars in the daylight very often. I've shot hogs in TX, TN, MO, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Turkey with over 1000 kills now and never had one charge me. Trust me, light gathering is where it's at !!! I'm currently using Trijicon 3-9x40 Accupoints, Leupold 3-9x50 VX-Rs, a Zeiss 2.5-10x50 Victory and a Elcan 1.5x/6x Specter DR with good success on various rifles.

Glad I signed on to the forum.

Very helpful and informed group.

After absorbing all advise, I turned a 180 and opted for the Trijicon accupoint 3-9x40.

Thanks .

Good choice, the 3-9x40 Accupoint is a very versatile scope.

Meopta Meostar 1.5-6x42 would also likely be a good option.

I found this thread a little late but: the new Cabelas had a Savage 9.3x62 w/orange camo stock and it's on lay-away I thought what kind of scope is a good fit.

"DGR" doesn't mean lions & tigers & hogs (oh my) in the northwest corner of the USA but we do have moose & bears. Why not the http://swfa.com/Bushnell-1-4x24-Trophy-XLT-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P48386.aspx for less-than 250 yd shots and it certainly has Ilya's favored #4 reticle?  Is there any opinion of that series of Bushnell scopes?
