Looking for some subject matter expert opinions on yet another scope choice.
I will be shooting predominately at ranges from >20 out to 100+ yards. Purpose - precision plinking, some target, some hunting (pest eradication) - basically a fun suppressed rifle to shoot small targets anywhere from close-in to "out yonder" of the .22LR reach and still built on a reasonable budget. It is a field gun that sees regular use in the woods and at the range. Rifle- Izhmash 7-2 Basic Biathlon - a .22LR toggle bolt with hammer forged barrel cut to 16" and threaded for an AAC Element suppressor. Very accurate and quiet shooting subsonic CCI Target rounds. Scope preferences: 3-4 X 14-20 variable magnification Side focus for a more rapid adjustable objective Mildot reticle for good holdover capability Nice range of eyebox at all magnification $500ish Currently between: Sightron 4.5-14x44 SII Series Big Sky Mil-Dot for $437 at www.competitorss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&prodID=SH630384 Hawke Sidewinder Tactical 4.5x14x42 for $420 at http://swfa.com/Hawke-45-14x42-Sidewinder-Tactical-30mm-Riflescope-P44553.aspx ------------------------- Sightron Pros- good reputation for clarity, lighter weight. Cons- older design (I guess by the lower price and lack of other sources), no side wheel. Hawke Sidewinder Pros- well built, great reticle, comes with mid sized side wheel, illuminated reticle a plus but not a must, reported great CS. Cons- heavy and big. Thanks for the read and look forward to some helpful guidance. |

I use a Mueller APV 4-14x44 clear as much more costly scopes cost me $129,only downside is a fairly
thick reticle but I've never found it to be a problem with target shooting out to 100 yards.

Hello Dyeman12,
Welcome to the forum! Here's a 4-16x42 SII Big Sky from the sample list with a target dot reticle. It is AO rather than sidewinder, but is very good glass for the money. http://www.samplelist.com/-P55996.aspx Speaking of Sample Lists- there are a number of scopes there RIGHT NOW which might interest you... |

If 100 yd is max then as much as I hate to do it, any of the Leupold EFR scopes would be very good choices as well. The fine duplex 3-9 X 33 fits the bill to a T. If you feel the need for more Magnification there is the 6.5-20 VX-3 EFR scope.

Nice rifle. I don't believe you will be impressed with the accuracy of the sub-sonics for target work (busting varmits with a muffler and sub-sonics, oh yes). I use a Tasco Custom Shop 8-40x56 on mine and the side wheel is a help in estimating range. Do wish it had a subtended reticle (personally not a fan of mill dots) to reduce some knob twisting for a quick shot.
Look forward to hearing about choice in scope. Regards, dsr Edited by dsr - April/20/2012 at 18:54 |
