Ok... Everyone always says Rear Parallax or Rear Focus, and Side Focus... but I never hear Side Parallax. Isn't it really a side PARALLAX knob on the Super Sniper scopes? To focus a scope, you go through the rigamarole of looking at a white wall and focusing the reticle, etc... and you usually only have to do it ONCE. Why would there need to be a side FOCUS knob?

You are correct. But most do refer to the parallax as focus. Probably because it is easier to spell...And when focusing the diopter, I would suggest a clear blue sky. This way the scope can be set on maximum mag(if a variable) and the parallax turned to infinity.

The rear portion of the scope screws in or out and has a locking ring this is an adjustable eye piece which should be focused with the reticle at its most sharp and clear point against a clear blue sky looking away and back to determine the correct setting. The rear focus is a different thing it will allow you to focus down to as close as about 12 yds and you adjust the focus as you get farther out. With the lower scope powers like 6x it is not as critical of an in focus depth of field as it is with the high power ones like 20x. The 6x is also the brightest in low light with a 7mm exit eye pupil where the 10x has a 4.2mm exit eye pupil and the 20x will look really grey in low light with its 2.1 mm exit eye pupil. In bright daylight the higher power ones are awesome but due to physics which the higher powers in any brand of scope suffer in low light.

Ok... again, when you say "rear focus" don't you mean PARALLAX? I am aware of the whole blue-sky/locking ring adjustment procedure which will get your own eye, along with its' own particular focusing requirements ti jive with the scope. But my question was, is the other adjustment on a SS scope that is called either "rear parallax" or "side focus" really just two names for the same thing? When you paid $100 extra for the side focus knob, it is really just PARALLAX that you are adjusting, right?

Yes they are adjusting the same thing. The particular adjustments are just in different places. The rear focus is just in front of the eye piece assembly, on the main tube. The side focus is in the turret box assembly, on the left hand side of the scope.

To me rear focus and parallax adjustment is not the same thing. Side focus and parallax adjustment is (to me) the same thing. Same with front focus and parralax adjustment, it is the same thing.
The rear focus focusses your reticle to a sharp image, thus bringing your reticle to the rear lense's focal point.
The front focus and side focus brings your picture from the objective lens onto the same plane as your now sharply focussed reticle, making it appear as one picture and hence parallax free.

Wouter he is asking about two different models of the same scope.
If you look at the top link, you notice that there is a ring just in front of the eye piece. This where the parallax adjustment is. On the other link, it is a traditional side-mounted parallax. And because the side focus is a bit more complex, it cost more. I have run a rear focus SS 10x for 3 years, and never had a hiccup. I recently upgraded to the SS 5-20 though!

That is the windage side but the scope is and M series with side focus note the slick area where no rear focus exists at the location where a rear focus would be. The more logical question is did I like the side focus model a hundred dollars better than the rear focus model since I have owned both and as a right handed shooter I like the side focus better but I do not think a left handed shooter would like it. I find the side focus easier to get a hold of however both work well enought to where it is not a problem to work with either style I just ordereds a 16x with rear focus and have had almost all of the existing models.

Just an FYI. I did not see it discussed in this topic, but when focusing the reticle the parallax adjustment needs to be set to infinity or the farthest distance when looking at the blue sky.

I actually think side focus and rear focus are the more proper terms. That adjustment adjusts the FOCUS of the image (not the reticle). When the image is focused on the same plane as the reticle, parallax is eliminated. You aren't adjusting parallax, you are adjusting focus, to eliminate parallax.
The diopter adjustment is used to focus the reticle. Set it and forget it. |
