I'd have to agree here that the SS 5-20 would be my choice too.  Now if your simply trying to keep some of the low end power the SS 3-9 or the Weaver tactical would be my second and third choice.

What will be the primary use of the rifle?

If shooting from the bench or fixed, stable positions, the SS5-20 is a good option.  If the rifle will be used in other applications, the answer depends on the rifle's use.

More details will get to a better answer.

Details about type of shooting..hobby shooting.  Probably never will consider any shots over 500 yards..like to see what i can do at 1000 just for the hell of it, but never near any range like that

I shoot off a range bag, sandbag or just prone unsupported..military style.

If the shtf then it would be good for 500 plus meter shots.  I have an AR-10 set up with a scope for 500 meters or less type shooting.

I have used the SS 10x scope and I like it very much.  It was the standard SS 10x.  I dont think I have a burning desire for much else.  I do not hunt little animals.  I just shoot paper or if shtf, bad actors.  So does that help?

Im still thinking the SS 5-20x50 would be a good choice and the other one that I also like is the Trijicon Accupoint 5-20x50 and I tend to like the red post but the green mil dot can be nice if you get one that is bright enough to see ( I have had some that were not as bright as the first one I bought).   I find that I can work pretty well with a fixed 6x42 so 5x is lower power than that and its really nice to have that 20x when you are wanting to look at the holes in the target.

My vote would have gone to the SS 5-20 for that price range, but the Mk 4 will serve you well.  Make sure to give your thoughts and a range report on it once you get it.  Pictures required.

I still have two of the Mk4 scopes one is an 8.5-25x50 illuminated mil dot the other is a 3.5-10x40 FFP and I will say that since I have those and two of the Super Sniper 5-20x50 that If I was not going to buy the SS I would go up a little more in price  and buy a Nightforce or better yet a U.S. Optics.

Also let me caution you aginst the Leupold Fixed 10x with M3 style knobs because I have had one and if you have a plus 20 moa rail you will never be closer than 20 inches high at 100 yds then on top of that the elevation clicks are 1 moa per click so very coarse adjustment and while good for combat not so good for precision shooting.  The 10x HD SS absolutely smokes this optic in every way and Ive had that one also but I reallly prefer a variable to be able to dial down and brighten the image in low light. Ive been full circle on this and the 5-20 SS is the best value for the $ they can have mine when they pry it from my cold dead hands.  Im also really fond of the 5-20x50 Trijicon Accupoint with the red post but it only has 50 moa and 1/4 moa clicks but should be in your price range and I would sure rather buy another one of those that another Leupold Mk4.

That is what I did. I went with a Nightforce over another Leupold and I am glad I did. But the SS5-20 was not available at that time.

Also here is some good reading.

I picked up an Bushnell Elite DMR with a H59 reticle last week and I love the 3.5-21x adjustment range.  I liked the length and great glass too.   I bought it for an AR-15, and for a soon to be delivered AR-10 .308, if it ever gets here.  Damn black guns are getting sucked up fast.

That is a better choice than a fixed high-mag optic.

Took me 4 rounds to zero the scope and then I shot the 3 round group.  Granted; it was at 50 yds indoors.  But this is the starting point and I need to find a good outdoor range.
