they also use several others... not exclusively Elcan.  Some HATE it, as much as some love it...
Opinion,untempered by fact,is ignorance.

There are some who do not fear death... for they are more afraid of not really living

Brother is a Ranger, 2nd Bat, and he has used the Elcan SpecterDR 1x/4x optic in Afghanistan as well as an Eotech and Aimpoint in Iraq.....it depends on the weapon and more importantly the area of operation. I worked with and dropped many SF guys in and around both countries and saw a wide array of optics on their firearms. There really is no one set go to optic for those gents.

No disrespect intended, but how does NATO get a mention next to Special Ops?

Weapons and optics are mission-specific.  It'd be nice if one gun did it all, but such is not the nature of the beast.

I had one .... sold it ... wasn't that impressed.   I like ACOGs better .... no batteries.  I destroyed a couple Eotechs in short order.  The Aimpoints (M68) or M2L Comp held up well (once you rotate it the mount so the knob isn't exposed).  I never used an ELCAN specter downrange but not sure if it would hold up.  The fixed 3.4 power elcans we ran on our M249s worked well.
