Hello, jeremywwallace.

There are a number of good suggestions in this thread: http://www.opticstalk.com/undecided-on-scope-for-ar15_topic32226.html

I'd also look at the Optisan - illuminated w/out bdc reticle, but has turrets:

Your going to be hard pressed to find a scope like you described within your $400 budget, my friend.

BDC reticles and lit reticles cost more $$$ typically and the lit reticles within your budget, will probably fail to impress you. IE...work.

I'd recommend maybe going with a Nikon 223 or a Burris Tac 30.

If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

Here is my thoughts on BDCs they are normally only true on 1 power, and must be checked with your gun, and load.  I personally prefer to dial in shots.  Sometimes time doesn't allow but i can holdover if need be.  This is what I'd do if I where you.

Optional Accessories:

This scope and then make yourself a label for the dials like a speed dial.  And if need be you can find out what distance the mil dots could be used as hold overs and you'd have the best of both worlds.  Its not illuminated but the reticle is dark enough it can be used in low light.

AFAIK, our host SWFA doesn't offer that model and there haven't been any reviews of it , here. If you can find a review, or better yet, look through one, then you can decide.

Kruger makes some great binoculars, but I don't know anything about their scopes. This model seems to meet all of your needs and lenses are fully multi- coated: http://swfa.com/Kruger-25-10x50-TacDriver-Tactical-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P47254.aspx

Some of the Hawke scopes have a great reputation. Here are some links: http://swfa.com/Hawke-Nite-Eye-Digi-IR-Riflescopes-C3492.aspx

or this Mueller: http://swfa.com/Mueller-3-10x44-Tac-II-Riflescope-P9137.aspx

Here are some more Nikon's not previously linked- (non-illuminated):http://swfa.com/Nikon-P-223-Riflescopes-C4159.aspx

I'm just showing you that there are many choices out there.  Click on the SWFA logo at top right of page and see what you can find.
The SWFA SS scope linked in prev. post is not illum, but you won't find better.
