So my upcoming trip to Texas has me at a bit of a crossroads.  99% of my shooting is target only.  I have plenty of guns set up for such (heavy barrel, not weight considerate).  I have several nice hunting rifles to.  Most inherated that have never actually been shot, put up, to be kept as more an investment items.  Then I have a few that have been shot and used a bit.  One my brother 243 ruger, another my dads browning 7mag.  Neither would I want anything to happen to them, hence the hesitation of using either.  My hunting around here I use either on of my target guns or an old lever action dirty 30.

I want to get a all around hunting rifle that I can used throughout.  Pretty much all NA non deadly game (bears and honey badgersWink) lol.  I like the ideal of having one custom put together and all but then again, wouldn't like a tikka t3 lite be just as good?  What direction would yall recommend?

If your looking for an "all-arounder" I'd be thinking utilitarian.  SS w/ syn or laminate stock for low maintenance, ease of disassemby/maintenance in the field, and availability of factory ammo where ever you go.  Hard to beat a .30-06 for the chambering.  For a rifle I'd look at the M70.  BUT within the next yr or so.

i dont know if you want or need a .300 mag, either belted or wsm, i love my .300's. any of the 7mm mags would fit the bill for pretty much any north american game the 7wsm is a great round that never really got the kudos it truly deserves. put a 160gr bullet on it and kill whatever walks in front of you.
if you want a standard .473 head round the above mentioned 30-06 is tried and true. ive even owned one in my short time on earth, was happy with it, very versatile very easy to reload wide selection of reloading components for it.

I'm not necessarily on a budget with the rifle either.  I won't be picking it up right away but I want to get a plan set so if I go the custom route I can get it started at least by picking up parts I'll use along the way.

My suggestion would be to find a used, stainless Rem 700 and customize it yourself, mostly. Have a good smith chamber, blueprint, crown and install an aftermarket barrel. buy a synthetic aftermarket stock. Fully Devcon bed it yourself. install a Timney trigger.

You will have a custom rifle with your own sweat mixed in.

I agree with Bitterroot Bulls, there is a shop in Knoxville that has quoted me the same work for a Remington 700 and it is the route I am going to go.  If you want pricing details let me know.  I am trading rifles with cheaptrick this weekend and am going to take his 243 to them and have it made into my precision target/hunting rifle.

A 700 action, good barrel, B&C Medalist stock, and perhaps a .280 Rem chamber.  A good gunsmith could turn these parts into a great hunting rifle for a reasonable price.

+1 for the .280, I really love the chambering! Rifle manufacturer is your choice.

the Tikka T3 hunter is a real nice rifle for the $$, but i'd get a M70. like mentioned, '06 is tried and true.

I take it you already load for .308, so this might also be a viable choice.

If I was not on a budget I would build one Hell of a nice hunting rifle. I could give you the specs of what I would build....... But it would run into money.

I absolutely love my BAR in 30-06.  I could see one in 300wsm as a great set-up too.  Could load up for Elk and such and load down a bit (30-06 level) for whitetails and such.  A hunting rifle doesn't need to be a tack driver and my BAR is plenty accurate enough for anything as big as a coyote and larger.  I'd prolly go with the synthetic one if I were going to do much mountain hunting... save a little on the weight.

I have a Kahles CL 3.5-10X50 on mine and it's close to perfect for Whitetails!
take em!

I have just exactly what you need. Rem 700 Stainless laminated thumbhole stock. 300 Win Mag. My right eye is going south and I will not be able to shoot it anymore. I loved the sleek lines and thumbhole stock and bought it even though I normally shoot left hand. PM if interested.

Do you want to hunt or do you want a project?  If I wanted to hunt I'd get a C-Z or a Sako and put the rest of the custom money towards a scope.   Otherwise it is a never ending project...  That you can never trade your money out of it...  Just plain gun lust would have me getting a Model 70 featherweight...  Serious gun lust would have a model 70 safety put on the C-Z.

I'd get a .25-06 before I got a .30-06.  I like .308, but a .243, .25-06, or 6.5x55 will work well, shoot flat enough, and not have a lot of recoil.  Always better to error on a handy gun for short and fast shots...

My go too gun for almost everything is my 300 WM.  But my 270 is close to it.  Anything in between would be good, but I have a special spot in my heart for the 300 WM and the 270.

The Tikka T3 stainless synthetic is hard to beat for value and accuracy it has a detachable mag and is light enough to be a pleasure to carry.  I bought the 300 WSM a caliber which I like very much after reloading it for a couple years now it loads very easily like a .308 does. It should do fine on any North American game and is large enough with 200 gr accubonds to kill the largest of critters here.  They also make one in 338 Win Mag and While I have never owned one of these it is a very appealing caliber. Shame they dont make it in .375 H&H that also is a favorite of mine.   If you want less recoil consider a 30-06 the factory ammo is certainly available everywhere cheap. I just have less trouble loading 300 WSM than I do loading 30-06.   300WM also pretty similar if you already shoot that caliber you may want to stay with ammo you have.  I like the heavy 30 cal guns and dont seem to have much use for smaller stuff other than .223 for coyotes.
When I shoot something I want it to know its been shot.

Nice Remmington 300WM above certainly a good choice also if you like a thumbhole stock.
