+1. I have the CZ 452 lux in .22 WMR, and I love it. The Bavarian style stock is great if you're only planning to shoot irons, but also doesn't have a negative effect on shooting with glass, either. |

CZ makes a fine rimfire. My 7 year old was shooting a buddy's 17 HMR, and breaking clays way out there.

That's the beauty of a 10/22. Their much cheaper, super accurate out of the box, cheap to upgrade, and extremely durable out in the field. We put a good scope on ours along with a light synthetic stock. Sighted it in once about 10 years ago and I'm sure it's groups are still much like SVT's. We don't punch paper, we hunt wabbit's with it. We warm the kids up each year by having them shoot the bottle caps off several water bottles ranging between between 50 and 100 yards, that's good enough for hunting. |

ive got one from 1970 something my dad won in college in a raffle. ticket cost him $1. it will not use a butler creek 25shot clear plastic clip though. it jams about every 2-3 shots. switch back to the factory ten it will run forever without a hiccup. its nothing like my cz 452 though.

Dale how does your savage shoot? Which model is that with the low mag scope on it? Is it a 17 or 22

I think the choice depends on how you intend to use it. If it is a rifle to train kids then a bold action or even a single shot is a good idea to teach them to place their shots and aim. With a semi auto kids tend to want to hear it go bang as fast as it will. The flip side of this is that the Ruger 10-22 is ultra reliable and has high capacity magazines available in addition to the standard 10 round rotary mag, quite useful for self defense when a larger caliber is not available. Both Marlin and Savage make some stainless bolt actions and Marlin Model 70PSS Stainless is a take down rifle that can be placed easily in a back pack as a survival rifle. The Ruger 10-22 can have a folding stock and also be fairly compact.
The Marlin 60SS http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/SelfLoading/60SS.asp has a tube magazine which holds 14 shots and the "micro-groove rifling" of Marlins seems to be very good, these tend to be a good value. Marlins lever action model 39A is also a takedown rifle but has the solid feel of a centerfire and the price to match, it is a lovely rifle with great ballance definately my all time favorites. Ruger also makes some bolt guns in 22, 22mag and 17hmr that are priced and built like a centerfire quality arms built to last a lifetime or two or three. 17hmr has outstanding accuracy and 22 mag has considerably more energy. I have an old lever action marlin 22 mag that I use to hunt coyotes. The savage stainless bolt gun I currently have with accutrigger and thumb hole stock does not shoot as well as the marlin 22 stainless bolt gun it replaced but its not off by much and good quality ammo makes a huge difference compared to bulk ammo. My only experience with CZ is having looked closely at them and I have refrained from purchasing one because I prefer a stainless gun but they are a favorite of many as you can see. Form follows function so decide how you want to use the rifle that will tell you what to select then attempte to locate one and see how it fits you. You may also want to consider 22 pistols like the Ruger Mark III |
