The 4.5-14x 44 or 50 would be my first choice in the Rapid Z800 reticle.
I like a 50 mm objective better but that only makes it brighter on 7x as opposed to bright on 6x in low light with a 44mm.

3-9X40 is quite a bit less expensive.

true the 3-9x40 is cheaper im wondering if the brightness of the 50 is worth the price increase

I would suggest that unless you are considering a model with a balistic reticle - (also more costly) NO the 50mm would not be worth the cost difference-- to me -- for a Plex type reticle, but you may feel differently. The 3-9 x40 has been their entry level scope to teach people what quality glass looks like. Now the difference between a plex at $499 (Shall we say $500) and the Rapid Z600 reticle $70 more - Oh Hell Yea its worth every penny difference.

And the step up to the 4.5-14x 44 Rapid Z800 is also worth every penny difference.

Regarding how bright a scope is in low light -- it is important to understnd that the relationship between the size of the objective and the magnification setting of the scope.
If I have a 6x42 fixed power scope like Leupold FX3 6x42 it will have 42mm divided by 6 power -- so 42divideved by 6 = 7mm exit eye pupil. In low light the eye of a young male will dialate to about 7mm as we grow older it may not dialate that much but we will use the 7mm exit eye pupil size for our measuring stick of brightness. So if i buy a 2.5 to 10x56 scope I will want to understand that on 10x it will have (56divided by 10 = 5.6mm exit eye pupil) 9x it will have (56 divided by 9 = 6.2 mm exit eye pupil) 8x it will have (56 divided by 8 = 7mm exit eye pupil) bright as it gets any power below 8 will have larger than a 7mm exit eye pupil so bright as it gets. Now for us old guys what if our eye only dialates to about 6mm then we will never notice the scope brighten up as we dial down from 10x to 8x. Now what if I bought a scope that was a 1-4x24? 24mm divided by 4x = 6mm exit eye pupil 24 divided by 7 = 3.4 so at any power 3.4 of below this scope has a 7mm exit eye pupil. Now what if I bouthg a scope that was a 5-20x50? at 20x 50mm divided by 20x = 2.5 mm exit eye pupil. so not very bright in low light but if we dial it down to 7 power of below is will be at a 7mm exit eye pupil. On higher power scopes the ability to dial down to brighten the image is critical in low light where on some scopes that are lower power it is not as critical. Understanding this relationship helps you to realize in low light dial down the power and brighten the image.

This is an example of how the Rapid Z system works:
2700 Ft per Sec with a balistic coefficient of .527 Zero at 200 yds at 9x line 3 282 yds line 4 364 yds line 5 452 yds line 6 539 yds at 9x but if you dial the power down to 7.32 power the lines represent this Zero at 200 yds at 7.32 x line 3 300 yds line 4 396yds line 5 500yds line 6 600 yds at 7.32x Test the figures on the range to make sure other factors like elevation and temperature etc do not have a significant effect.

Dial down to 6x and you can use it all night if you have any moon light it will be better than what you can see without a scope and the three heavy pointed posts will show up even when you cant see the finer parts of the reticle. It currently what is on my night time coyote rifle but I do like illuminated reticles at night still without paying for illumination this is as good as it gets. This was designed to go to war. |

I've walked around at night with both Conquests just to test and if there is enough light to detect a target, I can see the reticle and would be able to make a shot, even the Rapid Z is plenty visible (just not the fine marks, but plenty to aim.) Low- light performance was a concern before I bought the Rapid-Z600, but there was nothing to worry about... Exit pupil is dependent on which power you are using (objective lens diameter/magnification power= exit pupil: higher is better) You can crank up the power on even the largest objective scopes and not be able to see, but dial down to a lower power and you're good to go. Quality of glass/coating/build plays a part and one usually has to spend more money to beat a Conquest low- light performance. If low light and price point are your main considerations, to my eyes, Sightron Big Sky has great glass and is a little better than a Conquest in low light, but has narrower eyebox... several models have a $75 rebate. http://swfa.com/Sightron-SII-Big-Sky-Riflescopes-C174.aspx Bushnell Elite 4200's came pretty close to Conquest low- light performance at lower cost. All told, can't go wrong with a Conquest. |
