Am finding fewer reasons to keep reading OL. A guy at work had the latest issue, and in it they claim that a digital riflescope is just around the corner. What are they talking about?

A digital scope is trivial to build with current technology.
The moment there is enough demand for them, they will pop up everywhere. ILya

Agreed... changing old mores is difficult though. The Elcan has been out for a while, but the reviews on it are less than stellar. I've resisted getting one, waiting on the "next generation". I hope it is soon...

Nope. It is effectively a repackaged and ruggedized digital camera.

I think it is the way to go. Auto focus, auto iris for light, ridiculous zoom, ability to snap photos from scope. Auto adjusting reticle for ballistics data and range. Probably a pretty good auto zeroing capability. It will be as good as the firmware/software can make it. expense will come from the ability of the internals to survive the shock of thousands of rounds.

solid state should last forever. Just had a solid state telemetry chip fired in body of a rocket whose warhead was detonated by 20mm round/s. Located the chip and downloaded TM data... all good, ready to use again. Won't be used again, but it could be...
digital scopes, when finally produced en mass in this country, will overwhelm "standard" scopes.

You will see them with digital storage media that will allow you to zoom way in and replay the shot in HD, then download it to your smartphone and be able to sent it to all your friends or post it on U boob and Facebook.
Definitely will laser range the target and automatically adjust elevation and windage, and enter the GPS coordinates of the shot site. May scan the deer rack and give a digital readout B and C score.

I think I remember reading that a scope make shepard? had a retical that would mesure the spread of the rack.

If you know range and can fit within a "circle" in the reticle, an approximation of spread is possible. However, B&C score estimation is a fairly significant task. Would require a lot more compute power than is currently aboard any of the digitals on the market. There are a number of issues to resolve, and could be done... price would be "hefty" due to initial "NRE" costs... The marketers would then have to be "patient" enough to overcome the doubting public. And, reaching a price that would allow MOST common users access... It is easy to see why, even though "we have the technology", it is still years down the road. There has been no "overwhelming demand"... YET. New generations coming up in the electronic game "world" will begin to demand their real world firearms perform the magic available in games... watch out world... it's coming...

Hell, add 4G and a motorized tripod and we can hunt from work. Then we can get a network going. We can hunt all over the world without leaving our desks. lol
