What ever you get I would suggest getting one with the extended beaver tail grip.  Hammer bite suck arse IMO.
Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

That was one of the main reasons I was leaning toward the tactical.  I have some large fat meathooks! Shocked

If you want a 1911, get a 1911. If you want a double stack 45, get a Glock.

Sage, sage advice.

I could never get over the grip angle of the Glocks.  I was able to shoot them fine and put over 10,000 rounds through the 2 I had, and they always worked.  But I just never got used to it.  Good guns, just wish they would change that.  XDs have the exact same angle as the 1911.  Perfect IMO.

I had a Para double stack.  It was just feeding problem after feeding problem after feeding problem.  Para replace mags for me several times, but it never fixed the problem.  I had a single stack para also, with Wilson 47Ds it ran like a champ.

I remember a while back the FBI contracted with LB for double stack 1911's for their HRT but if memory serves me correctly they abanded the project because of reliability issues and returned to single stack configuration. Check here they will know http://1911forum.com If your hands are large get a single stack gun with an arched MSH and a long trigger.

Okay, now that we went there, my double stack is an HK USP. I also have a Glock 20, the 10mm version of the G21 .45. Get the Glock and don't look back. There are parts everywhere for replacement and customizing like the 1911. The Glock is easy to handle with low percieved recoil. Most important, they go boom every squeeze.
BTW, I do have a customized Colt 1911 A1.

Concerning the grip angle of the Glocks. I have talked with a number of people who have had grip work done on their Glocks for reduction and angle. And they now point like a 1911. This is something I am going to do, but have not gotten around to it yet for my Glock 34. I am having too much fun shooting my XD 40 Tactical.

I'm with SVT as far as your choices go.  Get the bare bones model and then upgrade to whatever it is you're wanting to do. (also gives you an excuse to spend countless hours fondling itCool)

Bud, I'm gonna throw you for a loop,  get a ruger 22/45, feels almost the same as a 1911 in your hand, and you can shoot it at your house, at the range, hundreds upon hundreds of times for very cheap.  While your enjoying it, save for that gold cup.

If you go with RIA I would suggest going with the tactical, to have sights cut into the slide of the mil-spec, it will cost you more than the difference in price of the two.  The upgrades of the tactical, make it well worth the additional cost.

Poor BudWhacko
If you want a double stack, there are several reliable pistols to choose from; that's for sure. Glock, H&K, Springfield XD, and FN, come to mind (if I had one) as candidates for reliable pistols. They all have different features that should meet your needs and prefrences. However, if your looking for a 1911 on a budget, I think you need to decide what you want it for. Is it for personal defense, competition, collecting, or playing/plinking. Once you have decided that, then that will determine which 1911 to get. If it's a defensive pistol, buy it set up that way, unless your a gunsmith. You want it to be reliable, and everytime you swap a part, you take the chance that you have effected the reliability. If it's for competition, or collecting how deep are your pockets. If it's for playing/plinking, then the field is wide open.
Have you considered a Kimber, Bud?
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

Happen to have one right here in front of me. A customer gun that I had to strip down and refinish due to being submerged in a truck door pannel for about a month. I thought it would have been trashed but it has cleaned up very nice. Its a two tone tacital 8rd mag and I'm liking it enough that I am seriously considering getting one. It has great potential to be built into a real shooter. If the guy doesn't pick it up by this weekend I plan to run some rds thru it. I had already planned to build me a custom 1911 but this appears to be a great platform. Or maybe good out of the box. For the money I believe it is a good choice. Look forward to hearing what you get.
Take care of Soldiers, Show em how its done and do it with em, Run to the Fight & and hold your ground! I die my men go home! If you're a NCO and this ain't you. GET OUT! GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Here is something interesting.... 22TCM  223 based wildcat....2100fps and 9mm barrel...swap and go!

ROCK ISLAND 1911 MICROMAG 22 TCM / 9M

Randy from GunsForSale.com writes that this is a brand new 1911-style autoloader chamberedin the new .22 TCM caliber. Rock Island Armory cartridge designer Fred Craig said the proprietary.223-based pistol caliber round sends a 40 grain jacketed hollow point bullet down range at 2100 feet per second. The goal was to make a 1911-type pistol “with the same weight, but double the firepower and delivering more foot pounds of energy.”

.22 TCM AND 9MM • 2 DIFFERENT BARRELS • Composite grips • 5 inch barrel

TWO GUNS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE !   $599.99

.22 TCM Ammo also available.  $25.00/box of 50.

worth trying.  if you get your bid in early and its high enough people get discouraged to see every bid they make go back to you.
