Zeiss Introduces the CONQUEST Superformance with Rapid-Z
CHESTER, Va., January 11, 2012 - Carl Zeiss Sports Optics has partnered with Hornady® Manufacturing to combine the success of two great brands and products into an easy-to-use, long-range shooting package. The new CONQUEST Superformance ™ riflescope with Rapid-Z™ reticle is the perfect "no thought, no fuss" solution for hunters seeking an easier way to hit long-distance targets accurately.

The CONQUEST Superformance ™ with Rapid-Z™ combines the legendary engineering and optical performance of ZEISS CONQUEST riflescopes and the proven accuracy and dependability of Hornady Superformance™ ammunition into one accurate and easy-to-use package. A shooter just needs to match a select Hornady Superformance™ caliber and bullet weight with one of the six select ZEISS CONQUEST Superformance™ riflescopes. (See table below). Then simply mount and zero the rifle for 200 yards, place the scope on maximum power, and start hitting targets with Hornady Superformance™ ammunition time after time. CONQUEST Superformance™ riflescopes are available with Rapid-Z™ 600 and Rapid-Z™ 800 reticles only.

This simple, intuitive concept means less time fussing with gear and calculations and more time hunting and shooting successfully.

"We are excited about bringing these two powerful brands together, especially combining such successful and popular products as Rapid-Z™ and Superformance™," said Robert J. Kaleta, Director of Communications and Technical Operations for Carl Zeiss Sports Optics. "This is an out-of-the-box "slap and go" solution that makes long-distance shooting quick, easy and

Interesting idea and cool to see them partnered with Hornady.  But I would be far more intereted if that did that in a FFP setup.

Without knowing all the details, I see one major potential problem.  The reticle, or CDS dial for that matter, will only work if the actual velocity of the ammo, as shot and tested through a chronograph, matches the published velocities of the Superformance ammo.

The SF ammo is my ammo of choice in both of my 7mags.  Seldom do the actual chrono'ed velocities match the manufacturers claims.  If that's the case, I don't see how the dials, or hashes, dots, etc could possibly be very accurate.

Hornady is a good company I would think there would some descent quality control. I also would think
in the "details" would also consider things like altitude and temperature too.

Generally, I think that holdover reticles in SFP planes are simply a silly concept.

With that out of the way, the velocity of the cartridge will always vary out of different guns.  However, for hunting purposes, I suspect the error due to velocity variation is a comparatively minor factor.  It can also me mitigated by intelligently sighting in.

Those are good points Ilya, but you have to sight in for 200yds, as per Chris in the description.

Once you sight in per instruction, you simply check the holdovers at appropriate distances.
If they are a little off at distance because your muzzle velocity is a little higher or lower that it is supposed to be, you can adjust your sight in a little.  For example, if you find yourself low at 500 yards, you can sight in a little high at 200.  For typical 308Win loads, for example, sighting in to be 1" high at 200 yards, will get your POI about 2.5" higher at 500 yards, or vice versa.

the muzzle velocity figures in hold over reticles is not as important as the es or extreme spread of the load being used, the longer the shot of course the greater the problem. this spread and the other deviatiions make up the cone of fire for the load/rifle combination your working with. dial in adherants as simply stating that the cone of fire at calculated ballasitic distance is equal to zero, instead of say, 12" for a deer that would translate to an entrance window about 50 yds, in front of the targetand 50 yds behind the target. In front would be a high hit and  behind would be a low shot., either of which could be lethal in practical situation. IPSC shooters do the same thing by stating that anyhing in a 8" by 11" zone or a zone is a kill shot. both are just saying that shooting groups don't mean sh*t. for a graphic illustration of this visit the swarovski web sight and their ballistic program shows this very well

an easier way to check your drops is simply use a calibrated in inch target, (or measure the distance if you don't have one) is simply shoot with each reticle held at the center , counting the moa distance and compare it too a programs such as JBM. this will give the hold overs for that hash. It will be a rare occasion when the hashes come out in whole numbers, ie  100,200 etc

The beautiful part about the second focal plane ballistic reticle is that if the marks all hit a little low at longer ranges, (due to lower velocities) you can dial the magnification down a touch, and bring your shots up. I've used the reticle quite extensively, and find it works well for what I'm using it for. (hunting within 500 yards, and steel out to 800)
