Haven't taken it to the range yet, but so far I'm cautiously optimistic.  This is my first bolt gun, and I really like the simplicity of it as well as the aesthetics.  The bolt is a little loose and not hard to bind a little if you put pressure up or to the side instead of just straight back, but I'm told that's just the nature of the Rugers.  The LC6 trigger was surprisingly okay for a field gun.  It was 5 lbs, 3 oz according to the gunsmith's gauge, but it didn't feel like it.  That's quite a bit heavier than the pull on my .308 AR, but it feels like much less.  Range work with a scope on it will tell whether it's a problem, but I'm strongly considering leaving it as is.  The ammunition is on the expensive side, but I knew that going in.  I plan to order some of the Hornady 270 gr Spirepoints unless someone has a better suggestion.

Any thoughts on improvements that will make it more functional would be appreciated.   Still researching which scope I want on it, so I'm still looking for input there as well.

Nice looking gun.
How about some info on the 99?

Cool gun.  I've wanted a 375 Ruger for a while now.

Very nice weapon. Ruger's tend to be a bit rough and tight at first, but get better with use. Don't be afraid to spend time cycling the bolt, pushing the safety on and off and dry firing. It will help a lot. FWIW, it's on my "list" for future purchases! Regarding the scope, I'd not be afraid to put a nice, low powered variable in the 1-5 range on it. I'd put it in QD mounts so it can be removed easily for the open site usage if necessary.
Heck, I'd even put a fixed 4X on it. Excellent

Very nice.  I really like my Ruger action.  I haven't had binding issues like you mention, but maybe it is just when they are new.  I put Warne QD rings on my Ruger and they work great. Some guy like the rings that come with them, and I used them until I went to a 30 mm scope.

ckk1106--  Thanks.  I'm looking forward to shooting it to see if I'll be satisfied with it.

bugsNbows--  Thanks.  I'll take that advice and work it out a little whenever I have down time.  As for the scope, I've ordered a VX-R 2-7x33 from SWFA that I'll put on it for now in Warne QD rings for Texas pigs.  I'll still be looking for someone to put out something in a similar or better mag range that has 4ish inches of eye relief,  reliable illum, and a hydrophobic coating.  I've only run across 2 of the 3 so far.  Couldn't bring myself to put out the money for the 1-6 Swaro without all three.

Bitterroot Bulls--  Manufactured in 1930 according to savage99.com based on the serial number.  It's been in my possession now for several years but belongs to a friend.  I've not shot it although he sent some .300 ammo with it.  There was one of more recent manufacture (probably 70's) in his safe, a 99E Series A in .308, that I bought from for $200 just to satisfy my curiosity.  I must say I don't particularly care for it (yes, I know that's heresy) and would buy a Marlin if I wanted another lever-action.

Helo18-- I didn't see your post when I replied to the others.  How do the Warnes work in terms of getting them off?  Do they just pop loose when you turn the levers, or do the levers act as ratchets to unscrew them?  How long does it take to get them off?

That picture of the 99s next to each other really illustrates the cost saving measures Savage went through to keep producing those rifles. They went from a sleek and stylish to frumpy.

That said, I would be glad to take that frumpy one you don't like off your hands for the price you paid.

A condition of buying it was to sell it back to my friend if I ever wanted to get rid of it.  If he changes his mind, though, I'll let you know and see if you're still interested.  The aesthetics of the 99s have never appealed to me, but the .300 is definitely more attractive than the .308.  I could get past the looks, since I'm more interested in function than form, but it's too finicky with ammo (only handles Rem Core-Lokt well), and the feel of the ejection and loading process just feels off to me somehow.  You've got me thinking maybe I need to go shoot the .300 a little and see if it's the same.

Couple turns of the lever on each ring, and they come right off.  I think it is pretty fast, but not going to be a instant thing.
