I thought this caliber was dead or dying but I was looking at the Federal site and notice that they offer (5) different loads for this cartridge. I haven't seen a rifle chambered in 7mm WSM anyone have experience with this cartridge?

On a slightly off note, during the ammo craze a few years back the WSM cartridges were available almost everywhere you looked, while everything else was cleaned off the shelves.  Don't know if it has any relevance to your question or not.

However I don't think the WSM family is in all honesty a "popular" cartridge.  Although I do believe that it has had enough of an impact that it will be around permanently.

I think the 300 WSM is here to stay everyone but Hornady sells it and lately it seems that almost everyone on the Outdoor Channel who shoots a 300 mag is shooting a short mag.

target shooters who consume a 100 times more bullets than hunters have pretty much told the bullet manufacturers the 7 and 30 wsm are here to stay.

While I have seen lots of 300 & 270 WSM's I have never seen a rifle chambered for the 7mm WSM. The ballistics seem to be pretty much the same as the 7mm Rem chambering so to me, the only real advantage would be this chambering in a small light sheep rifle like a Kimber Montana or something like that.

it does the same with less powder, in the 300, also the  7mm, while  a hunter wouldn't think of it but both the 7 and the 30 fit in AI mags with the lips altered a serious advantage

It also gives you a short action.  So you can run the action from prone without having to take your head off the stock and away from the scope.

I have one rifle in 7WSM and about to build another.  I love the round!  It performs identically to 7 Rem Mag in a short action, with no belt.  7WSM gives you much better bullet selection than .270WSM, and 7mm in general offers some higher BC options than most other calibers.  If suppliers are out of brass, you can easily make brass from .270 or .300WSM.  It delivers a formidable punch on the business end while not doling out too much punishment on the driver's end.  When you factor everything -- high retained energy, low wind drift, and flat trajectory from efficient, high BC bullet designs, excellent accuracy, all while delivering modest recoil... the 7WSM is a WINNER!

While I can see that rifles being chambered in the 7 wsm are dying off, I think the caliber is too popular with the long range, and extra long range shooting community to go away all together. There are many custom rifles chambered for this caliber to this day, just not much in the factory rifles.

I have heard the wsm won't be around comments for a long time. I bought a 300wsm, and have to say I am very impressed with the lack of shoulder pound as aposed to a friend's 300 wm which weighs more. Both were using 180gr federal accubond @2960 fsp. Why his seemed to kick more is beond me, but we both agreed. I also like the short action, which is why chose a wsm. I think all of the wsms including the 7wsm will be a permanent fixture. Right now the 270 and possibly moreso the 300 wsm are getting more air time, in the wsm market. I like and will be keeping mine.

WSMs are a great cartridge, and will keep up with the mags for the most part, although they seem to loose ground in the heavier bullets.  I don't have a 7mm, but I think if I was going to go that route, I would consider the 7 WSM.

coldhunt, I have a 300 WM, and have shot 300 WSMs next to it (both 180s at that time, although I have moved up to 190 and 200 gr in my WM and like them much more than the 180sd).  The recoils were different to me, not so much in how much there was, but what type.  The 300 WM seems like more of push to me than the sharper kick of the WSM.  Just my opinion.

helo, I can't put my finger on the recoil difference, maybe it is just the different guns, with different stock designs. Both have good recoil pads. It appears that SamC is considering the 7wsm, and I think if this is the case Sam, go for it. It is nice to have a little faster, flatter shooting round in a short action. I was a little apprehensive when I started considering the wsm, but couldn't find to much negative.

Na, I already have a 7mm Rem Mag, I was just curious.

I would guess that it does the same thing as the regular belted 7mm Rem mag but in a shorter action. I have had both the 7mm belted version and the 7mm wsm and the ballistics were just about the same. Both shot 139 - 140 gr real fast with R22 - I wanted a long range deer rifle.
In my rifles a FN Mauser (7mm Rem) and a Kimber 8400, Ruger 77 MKII 7mm WSM the 7mm Rem mag fed better. I noted that pressure levels for the 7mm WSM are often exceed 63,000 psi some 2000 psi more than the belted 7mm Rem mag.
If I had to have an extreme accuracy contest I would go for the 7mm WSM because most max loads for the 7mm Rem fill the case only to the 85% level. Both rifles can reach way out there.
Just my thoughts and I would expect that many readers would have different ideas.
But to pyro6999 the .375 really does kill very dead - especially with the 300 gr Swift AFrame

I too shoot the 270 Hornady at 1/3 the price of AFrames.

Reading Last of The Few, by Tony Sanchez Arino, on page 33 he gets into shooting lions with the 270 gr. Win Power Point ... "I found more killing power in the aformentioned 270 grain Power Point...left the lions dead on impact" That bullet looks like a twin of the 270 gr Hornady. I mostly shoot varmints and an occasional deer now but still keep my .375 because I know how well it works.

given identical rifle configurations, the 10-20 more grains of powder from the wm will give more recoil creating the same ballistics, as the calculations include the powder mass as part of the ejecta. I get 3400 fps out of an spr 300 wsm with superperformance and 155 amax, and can only get 3200 from 155 amax out of 26" trg in the wm. not to bad as either hangs with the 6.5x284 in 1000 yd shooting. If your worried about killing power with any of the mags you should be looking at Hornadys new Zombie loads.
