Looking at either of these scopes for a .22 mag. Does anyone have either of these or compared the two? Is the Leupold so much better to quantify the big difference in price? Which would you prefer and why? Thanks...

The specs on the two are close. Only an ounce in weight, and nearly the same length.
The Weaver wins handily on price. The Leupold likely has a bit better eyebox and slightly longer eye relief for what that's worth on a .22 Magnum. Glass quality is a tossup between the two and will depend on your eye's preference. The Weaver is Japanese built (LOW, I believe), and despite the description at SWFA, is fully multicoated (see Weaver's page). The EFR is basically a VXII, so also decent glass, but is only multicoated so far as I know. Leupold wins on warranty, but the Weaver warranty is theoretically lifetime, too (provided the company doesn't change hands). The RV9 is matte, but the EFR is gloss for what that's worth (I hate gloss scopes as I think they slip easier in the rings). The Weaver is coin adjust only (but is actually resettable), and the Leupold has the standard VXII adjustments, which were state of the art in 1989. So they have antiquated adjustments. IMHO, I'd go Weaver RV9 as I think that too much of the Leupold's price is taken up by their (admittedly excellent) warranty. If I had the cash to buy the EFR, I'd just get a Weaver V16 instead for a .22WMR. While a heavy and large scope, that would step you up to Weaver's excellent semi-target turrets which excel for dialing in elevation and windage. For some absurd reason, Weaver doesn't equip the RV9 with the semi-target turrets (though another, non SWFA scope brand builds an RV9 clone with the Weaver turrets). |

Thankyou for the advice. Just what I was looking for.
I was hoping for a smaller sized variable power AO scope but also wouldnt mind something with a larger objective(like 40mm) that had smaller dimensions(like 12 inches long or less).
Not too easy to find though!!

Another option if you want high power in a small package under 12" length:
http://swfa.com/Burris-45-14x32-Timberline-Rifle-Scope-P11004.aspx I'll caveat this scope by saying that I think 32mm is too little objective for a 4.5-14x. But it is a compact scope, has a good warranty, and Burris glass is pretty good. |

Another choice is the Sightron BS 3-9 X 36 A.O. Good glass.

Nikon has a new 3x9x40 EFR due out.... Looks like a nice option priced around $180.
Is the Leupold 3x9 EFR getting an upgrade to the newer VX2 glass or will it remain a VX II? |

Yes it is, and my 3.5-10x50 EFR Vari-XIII is a very good scope. The new VX-2 should be better in the 3-9 EFR.

Just ordered knew VX2. Former VXll Leupold Ultralight 3x9x33MM with EFR in Gloss, standard Duplex, old Leupold number 58520, replaced as VX2, new number is 110822. Leupold Rep says several upgrades, including non lead glass. Hasn't answered my question yet on optics, as old 58520 had the MultiCoat 4 coatings. Gloss is available.
