Hello everyone.
I have a Weatherby Vangaurd 300 wby mag. The "factory" recoil pad that is on it is NOT cutting it. This thing is brutal. Does anyone know where i can purchase a nice thick recoil pad for it. Im not looking to port the barrel or send it off. Also not looking for a slip on cheap pad either. Does anyone have any good recomendations? Thank You for your help.

Heard great things about the one Kickboxer mentioned, and there is also Limbsaver. Not sure which one is technically better, or the price difference of the two.

Does yours say weatherby or Pachmayr on the butt of the recoil pad. Mine says Weatherby.
I found a grind-to-fit recoil pad that can be grround down to the size i need but i dont wanna spend any money on a gun smith.

I no longer have it and I honestly don't remember exactly, but I'm certain it says Weatherby. I believe it is made by Pachmayr for Weatherby. It is considered to be quite good for a Vanguard-style rifle...

The Sub-MOA has a completely diff stock(Bell & Carlson) than the std Synthetic Vanguard(Butler Creek?). The std Synthetic Vanguard is an injection molded stock with a "low density foam"recoil pad. The Sub-MOA can cost as much as 3x more than the std Vanguard so that should tell you which model you have. I've messed with one Synthetic Vanguard (Walmart). It was a .300 Weatherby model. I found the stock to be totally functional but definitely not the best for getting the most accuracy out of the rifle(flimsy forend for one). The owner sold it due to the recoil. IF the recoil pad on it can be screwed off(some are glued on)maybe you can try and match a better one up to it. I did a quick search and found a direct replacement Kick-EZ but only for the wood stocked Vanguards.

Tyler,
Take it to your gunsmith, he can install a good recoil pad on it for a few bucks and he can also ensure that the stock fits you correctly. Having said that, as you are probably aware all 300 mags have a bit of kick to them and the Weatherby mags can have a bit more. Most people learn to tolerate it but some do not so they drop down in caliber like to 30 06, etc.

I called a gunsmith and he said a little over 80 bucks to fit one. He said it would take the kick down to a 308/30-06. Does this sound right?

I can't see it happening unless that recoil pad weighs at least a pound. Only way your going to reduce actual recoil is by reducing bullet velocity, bullet weight,or increase rifle weight(like using a Boyd's stock). You could reduce felt recoil by going with another stock design if that one doesn't work for you.
Forgot one option. A muzzle brake. Edited by 300S&W - November/04/2011 at 05:08 |

IF it is a real problem, there is a mercury-filled recoil reducer that can be installed and it IS fairly effective if properly installed. A recoil pad does nothing to actually reduce recoil, it only "pads" it. Anyone who tells you it reduces recoil is either yanking your chain or uninformed. A rifle with a recoil pad on it still transfers the same amount of energy to the point of contact... the butt of the rifle, the pad just spreads it out more. Same concept could be applied to football pads. As stated above, a muzzle brake will provide some real reduction... depending on type can be anywhere from 30% to 60%. I've seen claims for higher reduction, but ??? Stock design has a significant impact as it determines the "path" of recoil forces. The Vanguard I had for a few days I only got to shoot a box of shells through... it was relatively mild in my opinion. The Pachmayr pad seemed good to me. I got a great deal, knew someone who wanted one and let him have it for what I got it for, after I tested it out. I let him keep the Leupold rings and base, too, so I lost money on the "deal"...
I almost bought one of the WalMart Vanguards for $300.00 (they were selling out the line), but my wife said "do you REALLY want this?". I said "no, but..." She just looked at me and I realized I really didn't need it...

Just curious to what grain bullet your using? If its a 180gr, you may consider dropping down to a 165 or 150gr (just make sure its of premium quality) that, with a good recoil pad may be enough to make the rifle some what more comfortable. Once you have the rifle zero'd, get off the bench. Recoil is usually more tolerable in normal hunting type positions.

+1!!
I've seen quite a few of those Boyd stocks. GOOD stuff. With the design and extra weight you'll gain with the stock plus a decent recoil pad I'd bet you'll be able to handle those 180's just fine.
