I am looking for a scope to go on my 270.  I am in the Hill Country of Texas so deer shots of 80 yards are not uncommon.  However, I also mule deer hunt so I need to be able to shoot about 300-500 yards.  What are the suggestions on magnification and brand for below $700?

I don't care much for 3-9 scopes, but they are, unfortunately, probably ideal for your stated requirements.  I would go for a 3-9 SuperSniper.  I've evaluated it, and it is one of the few 3-9's I would care to own.  It's tough, adjustments are dead on and repeatable.

+1 on the SS 3-9. That is what is on my 270. Great scope and match for the gun. If you don't like tactical setups, the Ziess Conquest would be a good scope to look at.

A 3.5-10 Leupold would also be a good choice. They are light weight, trim and reliable. They also have more reticle options than most other scope manufacturers.
If you like tactical scopes I have also hunted with the SS 3-9 and it is a great all around scope.

I have the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 on my Browning BAR .270!!!!!!!

Love the scope! and my Browning  is my favorite hunting rifle that I own.

Here are some other options:
1). Minox ZA5  3-15 X 42
2). Sightron Big Sky  3-12 X 42
3). Burris Six X  2-12 X 40
4). Bushnell Elite 6500  2.5-16 X 42

Good luck and welcome to the O.T.!

Thanks for the advice.  I will probably go with a Leupold just because it seems to be a little less pay for brand as in the Ziess and it has just always done great for me.

Last question: would it be more beneficial to go with a 3.5-10x50mm  4.5-14x40mm?

I would not want anything over 3x on the bottom end if you are going to shoot at 80yds. The field of view on the scopes with a higher magnification on the bottom end is getting too narrow for me anyway. Makes it hard to find your target quickly with a narrow field of view. And 9x is plenty for 500yd shots.

I am toying with this Leupold for my 270 Sako. Mainly because it has an illuminated reticle. For those times I am in a low light situation.
