What is the right distance between the objective bell to barrel(1/4, 1/8, 1/16)?

I have a tikka t-3 lite and am going to pick a 1" 40mm scope. I am understanding talley lows will work the best? Am I on the right track??

There is no "right' distance. Most folks just try to go as low as possible and still leave visible clearance. I try to get around 1/8 inch / 3mm or so if possible. If you are going to utilize scope caps/ covers, you'll need a bit of room for them. Tikka, Talley's and a 40 mm scope (of decent quality of course) sounds like a winning combination. Good luck.

Low or extra low?

I'm not 100% sure. Talley's run a bit high typically. I'd suggest you give them a call or call SWFA and ask for their opinion. Good luck.

The scope rings that came with the rifle put an old tasco 40mm scope I had laying around 1/4 of an inch above the barrel. I was told today that is entirely too high.

I suppose it makes a difference on the brand of scope -- not all 40mm scopes have the same outside diameter??

1/4" is "entirely too high" ?!?!  I don't think so.

To give you an idea of the o.d. of 40mm scopes my 3-10x40 Weaver GS measures 47.2mm o.d.  My 4.75 x40 Weaver GS is 47.2mm.  My 6x40 Simmons is 46.6mm.

My 4x32 Conquest measures 37.8mm o.d. and sits 3/8" hi above the bbl in a set of low Talleys(x lows weren't available then).  The high comb on the stock makes it a good height FOR ME.  I'm thinking the x-lows would work with a 40mm scope but I'd check with SWFA first. As bNb says Talleys run a bit high. I consider their lows as mediums.

A 1/4 looked fine to me but I am not an expert.
I was also told by the same guy the rings came with my Tikka T-3 lite are "junk" they seem like they are well made.

The hi/low thing can be tricky.  Most of the time I'd guess lowest would work but I do have one set up where the scope is a bit too low.  I have to do a FIRM cheek weld but it's nothing I can't live with.  The structure of ones face and stock design can also be a deciding factor.
As far as those Tikka rings go I've read a few posts that lean both ways but have no personal experience with them.  If your concerned and if he don't post here you can PM Urimaginaryfrnd and ask him.  He's got Tikka experience.

As mentioned, the height is matter of preference. I've used 50mm on Talley lows on a T3 lite (the barrel contour lets you get away with it). The bikini cover was a snug fit.

I put a Zeiss 40mm on Talley lows in t3 lite and there was more than a 1/8" gap.

BTW, SWFA sells Talley x-lows.
