how many of you hunt out of a truck? not driving around, but just pull up and park somewhere with a good view.. my dad has always been a believer in it and that deer pay no attention 99% of the time to a parked truck.. On most places they are used to seeing vehicles, now, a truck driving slow and then stopping when a deer is spotted sends most bucks hauling for the next county... I shot my best buck yet, out of the truck hunting with my dad and son about 7 years ago down at a friend's place outside of Refugio, TX. It was about 10:30 AM on the last morning of a 3 day hunt, we left the hotel before daybreak and just put my sleeping son in the rear seat and covered him with a blanket. We pulled into a spot and backed in to a nice little area with a good view. Cracked the windows and had the truck idling with the heater on, it was January and down in the low 30s.. My son woke up about 8:30 and about an hour later was getting homesick, wanted to go home and see his baby brother. Kept saying "there are no deer here, let's go!" or standard response "just a little bit longer" kind of like "just one more cast" well, about an hour later here come some deer and out of the brush a little buck following some does.. sure enough, a big boy was following him they disappeared into the brush and then the does came out through a sendero about 150 yards out.. followed by the little buck and then the big boy was hung up in the edge of the trees and finally took a step forward. then another and I still couldn't get a shot because there was an old blind between us and I couldn't line up on the shot. finally he stepped forward and with me in the passenger seat with the window down and a perfect rest with the rear view mirror I let him have it. down it went. seemed like he took forever to come out into a clear shot for me.. little did I know that my dad had his 22-250 out the driver's side window with a clear shot the whole time.. he told me if it had been anyone else he would have shot that deer out from underneath me! him and my uncles and old hunting buddies were ruthless with that.. no mercy whatsoever. obviously, the memory of hunting with dad and my son and teaching him the invaluable lesson of patience when hunting are the best parts. This was on a 150 acre piece of land with low fence and no feeders. I was using an old, 59 Sako 243 that I have handed down to the my boy (7 in this picture, now 14) and his little brother is 7 now and loves hunting |

Nice buck. GREAT pic to.
Not allowed to hunt out of truck in WV (maybe with a special permit for med reasons?). No loaded weapons allowed and all weapons in the vehicle must be cased after 5pm.

+1 on the great pic.
We'll take a late afternoon hunts in our '42 jeep and sometimes catch one out going for water or laying down in the shade cooling off. It's private property, rugged dirt roads, and not something you'd drive a disco wheeler through. Our kid's love these type of hunts, it keeps their attention looking for game, etc. Edited by mike650 - October/24/2011 at 14:25 |

It is a big NO NO in South Africa. It is considered unsportmanslike. Yet most of have done it from time to time, but would never admit to it.
The rage here in South Africa is that unless you have crawled half naked, with a Bowie knife clenched between your teeth, for 2miles on the tracks of the deer, then ran it in and stabbed it to death, you have hunted in an unethical manner!!!
Our ethical hunting debates have reached epic proportions of speaking drivel.
So definatley no vehicle hunts, no driven hunts, no use of dogs. Just you on foot pitting your strength against beast and nature.
Right on...

Totally legal in Texas on private property
Really, what is the difference between a parked truck and a blind? |

Blinds don't usually have wheels!!!
Illegal in Maryland and PA! Funny, there is an article in the PA fish & Game magazine this month that touches on vehicles. It has been observed by many hunters who are in stands, blinds or still hunting that when a motorized vehicle of any kind approach the deer go on high alert and many bolt for cover. It has also been observed that the same vehicle returning some time later will cause the deer to relax and drop their guard some. With the advent of cellphones several hunting buddies might spot a trophy buck out of range and phone it to a fellow hunter. They have developed a technic that works surprisingly well. The mobile hunters will drive pass the deer location at a safe distance, continue several hundred yards then circle back. As they pass the deer's location a hunter will drop off the vechile a short distance from the deer as the vehicle continues on. They then wait a few minutes then often will often quite successfully stalk the relaxed deer and take him. This works especially well in farm country.

Aren't the use of two way communication devices illegal for hunting in some states? Maybe western ones?

In MT you can drive around looking for game with a loaded gun in your lap, but you have to be out of the vehicle and off of the roadway to take a shot. But those are the rules, and I have seen more than one pckcup running around my area with rifle rests mounted on the grillguard.

Nothing ruins meat like an animal run to exhaustion, heating itself up and pumping adrenalin into every muscle.

I tried to butcher one once that was fighting with another buck until it basically collapsed. Meat was mushy, and nasty.

In NC you get the same if your in the interior of the vehicle. You can still hunt out the back or roof but not the interior. Vehicle can not be moving as well. Same with a boat, if you have a boat you can't shoot while moving from the propulsion of a gas or electric motor. So youd have to pull the motor, wait til you stop drifting, then you can shoot. Believe it or not there are a lot of hunters who boat to their hunting grounds around here in the swamp.
Also in NC, if your spot lighting and get caught with a gun in your truck, ya better get some bus tokens cause the same thing happens. The intent is all they need on that. Fella almost lost his truck, gun, and got a huge fine because of doing this. His only saving grace was that he did not have any bullet for the gun with him or in the vehicle. He told the officers this at the time but they still arrested him and seized his stuff, only after trial with a lawyer did he get cleared, still cost him several $$$$ to get it all cleared up. |
