Does it matter if the rings are to close to the turret housing? Just mounted my Ziess conquest on my 308 and the eye relief puts it to far forwards. Its on some leupold dovetail rings (the only ones i had). The ring is about a quater inch from the turret housing. Will it damage anything if its fired? Procurement of a base and some rings is in process. Ive mounted many scopes, but never ran into this problem.

Typically, you want to be further away from the turret then that. Can you post a picture?

A 1/4" should not be a problem as long as you are careful not to over torque the ring screws. You may want to get a set of extended rings just to be on the safe side

Don't think that will hurt anything. What type of base/ring combo are you replacing it with?
That's one reason prefer a picatinny rail. Gives you more fore and aft, so you can get your scope up "just right".

Or you can put a limbsaver pad that will give you extra little more than 1/4", then move scope back |

The answer is "not always... but it can"... Best to mount further away.
