What pistol would yall recommend for hunting smaller NC deer with. A large deer hear may top out at 150#s with few and far between getting more than 125#. I have used the dan wesson 357 mag before but it has been put up and relagated as collectable from the sentimental value attached to it. Wanting to pick up something else as a hunting pistol. NO brand preference or round preference as long as it get the job done. I'd like double action but am not opposed to single action. I don't wanna spend a great deal of money on one but don't want something thats gonna fail me down the road either.
NC law says it cannot be less than .25 caliper. NO barrel length requirment (i'd prefer at least 4" no more than 6")

What do yall think about using "auto" rounds to hunt with? 45auto? or 10mm?

Maybe a 10mm, but I wouldn't go .45; to slow for distant shots.

My vote is for a revolver of 44mag or greater, are you planning to scope it?

If you want something purely for hunting, I would consider a TC in a variety of calibers. Barrels are easily switched for varminting calibers and optics are plenty. I have one and it is great for all around handgun hunting.
The Redhawk in .44 is nice. Mine has a 2x Leo and works great on deer. My longest shot has been 40 yds, but it is m.o.w. @ 100 yds.
The G20 in 10mm will definitely work on deer but I wouldn't shoot past 40 yds. with mine. I would put most of my 4" wheel guns in the same category.

I have dropped more Deer with a .357 Colt Trooper Mk III 6" than all my rifles combined. I prefer 158 Gr HP at 1200+ fps. It will only drop about 3.5" at 100 yd and still be above 1000 fps.

NO SUCH THING AS TOO MUCH GUN... The recoil is really smooth... lay into a second shot very quickly. Love that revolver.

If I take the plunge into handgun hunting, it is going to be a 460 S&W Magnum.

TC Encore with Bullberry barrel. One is 45-70 the other is 44 mag and the 44 mag now wears an Aimpoint 9000L If your state allows other than straight wall cartridges I would suggest .308 or 7mm08 but the sky is the llimit on calibers at http://www.bullberry.com/ If you want a revolver pick a Smith and Wesson 629 or 686Plus or one of the other larger ones - I prefer 44mag but this 45-70 is ideal for those who scream the praises of the 500 or 460 S&W's

It would depend on what i would be comfortable with after shooting the gun. obviously whatever i could accurately hit out to and ethically use it to.

I'd love to have one of them MOA handguns now but can't swing that right now.

The Mod. 57 41Magnum is a misunderstood cartridge that actually should have been a great success. I think it failed because of it's name and when it was released. When it was released with the Magnum name alot of urban P.D.s wouldn't allow it's use because it had Magnum in it's name, and that had the conotation that the PD was out to kill people. The cast bullit load was ideal for Law Enforcement work, while the jacketed bullit load was an ideal hunting load. In fact the 10mm Auto was based on duplicating the 41s cast bullit load for LE work. If you look at the ballistics of the 41 cast load and the original Norma 10mm Auto load, they are almost identical.
For many years the .41 Magnum was the cartridge to beat in the production class of silohette handgun matches, because it shot flatter than the 44Magnum and had almost as much energy at the same distances.
While I still think the .357 is the best choice because of ammo availability, you certainly couldn't go wrong with a .41 Magnum.
