Was and still looking at leupold mark ar & nikon 223... need more choices.

Some of what I'm looking for... open to all suggestions.

hunting mainly
Mil-dot
lighter the better
no mail order
custom-ized turret... for range not for wind drift(that is what the mil-dot is for)
some type of lens caps(like the ones leupold sell)
customer service
short 12 - 13 inches
warranty
worth something if I want to up-grade
40 mm or less(as close to rifle as possible)
$$$ depends

????

What rifle are you wanting to use is it an AR-15 or a bolt gun?

Is it .223 ?  Why do you say "no mail order" that will severly limit your choices.
Do you have a price range in mind?
When you say short 12 -13 inches you need to realize that unless it is a fixed power the short variable scopes often have a very short area front to  back where the scope comes clearly in focus.

I will list a couple I like real well.

How about the SS 1-4x?
http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-1-4x24-Tactical-30mm-Riflescope-P48361.aspx

I do it all the time, but depending on where and how you hunt, Mil Dots aren't the best reticles for hunting.
A German #4 is a better choice...too me anywho.

I kind of think he is putting it on an AR but he didnt say.  This is my favorite AR scope as big ones can feel really clumsy.

The 1-4x SS does weigh more than the ACOG, but balances out pretty well on my AR.

I dont have one of the 1-4  SS for some reason I have a hard time thinking 4x on the top end is enough since I really like a fixed 6X and an Aimpoint.   About the only 1-4 that appeals to me is the Trijicon red post but I would much rather have a 1.5-6 than a 1-4.
I kind of think he is looking for something more like this:

High plains/mountain states hunting(Wyo,Montana,North-South Dakota,Colorado,Utah, etc.) So nothing less than 3X9 for up to 500 yds give or take. 100% DIY public land hunted so something light for the hike. 308 win. so recoil is not a factor.
I like to "look at in hand" before buying(just me).
Need something durable and backed by a top notch warranty(90+ degrees antelope hunting in wyo to late season deer hunting in s. dakota 10 to 20 or more below zero --- rain --- scope covers are a must)

You could mail order this look at it dont mount it unless you want to keep it send it back if you dont want it.  I have two of them and I like them.   5x is low enough for me on the low end and I may not use 20x that much but if I want a closer look I can get there.  Huge having it be first focal plane so mil marks can be used for hold over same same at any power setting.  And Mil Mil sure makes it easy to dial part and hold over part.  3.2 mil correction dial two clicks hold on the third mil down on the reticle no matter what power setting.
Nightforce makes similar for about eight hundred more.

Thanks for all of the advice.
I found a leupold mark AR 3x9 mil-dot at    XXXXXXXX  for 139.00 w/full warranty.
Customizable elevation adjustment dial(for:Corbon t-dpx 168 gr. barnes ttsx) is on its way.
Zeroed(Corbon made ammo to the rifle) at 100 yards shot(Corbon) a .142 group.
Not bad for a sub-7 pound rifle with no bull barrel? Tikka t-3 lite stainless 308 - hollowed-out stock recoil pad - fluted barrel - ultra light rings - minimalist sling & ultra light swivel & stud - 12oz scope w/caps - - - - - = at just under 7 pounds and for $678.00 a made for DIY - fair chase - on public land - in the high country and on a budget to boot.

Bagged a south dakota antelope at 314 yards(ranged) one shot ran 20-30 feet fell over. Scope worked great -- looked almost new(ever so slight scope ring marks are only thing I can as a "abused or heavily used") considering where I purchased the scope there is no way it is a "fake".
