Getting the custom itch. I am left handed which is the first issue. I want something in the280 to 338 range. I am leaning towards 300 win mag. I want 1/2 moa and 700 yd + ability. I don't think that I want to customize a factory gun--I want a one off
There are several really good and well known builders who charge accordingly. Kenny Jarrett is incredible. However, I am not willing to part with 7500 for one of his fire sticks.
What is a reasonable cost for said meat stick? I have researched hart and McMillan and Nosler and Christianson. And a few others.
I value relationship with the builder so proximity to south Carolina is important. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Have you thought about using John Lewis @ Carolina Precision Rifles ? John is Kenny's old shop manager.

Roy, what would be your recommendation for left hand action since CPR builds with customer supplied action?

If you are considering a light weight, accurate hunting rig check out bettincustomguns.com. Todd is a vetrinarian, as well as a custom builder, he also does load development, and has his own 1000 yd range. He won't pound out your gun quick but he will build it right. Not quite a stone throw from you though.

A few quick thoughts, as I have been in that same situation a few times.

1.  Some of the larger custom shops that got famous on one builder, that builder ain't building any more.

2.  The "bang-for-buck" winner is definitely the Remington 5R.  I have a 5R in 300WM that beast the hell out of many custom builder's product. (In terms of accuracy, I should say.  Any decent custom shop will have great fit and finish.)

3.  Lefty options about, especially in the custom word.

Let us know what you want to spend and what your timeframe is and we can narrow the list of actions.  And do you shoot lefty rifles now?  I shoot ambi and have found that a right action run lefty works best for me.  I own lefty rifles but don't love the experience.  A righty shot lefty allows me to maintain site picture and trigger placement while running the action with my off hand.

4.  It's all about the barrel! And the smith!  A great barrel fitted poorly is no good, as is a crap barrel well fitted.  Don't save money on the barrel!

5. Get a stock that fits you well.

6. Cut no corners.  If you plan to spend what a custom costs to make, don't skimp, you'll regret it later.

A box-stock 5R will run like a champ for about $1000, or a custom will be an eye- and range-pleaser for about $3,000: choose wisely.
Freedom is something you take.
Respect is something you earn.
Equality is something you whine about not being given.

I shoot lefty abolt 7mag and have for nearly 18 yrs. Heading to south Africa in may 2012 for plains game. I know the abolt SS will work just fine. But...
CPRin Jackson SC referenced earlier builds a fine rifle for approx 2800. Another builder with great recommendations (CCR) builds one offs for long range rifles with load development for about 3500. Not really looking for range beauty but I am looking for lefty with accuracy better than current 7 mag. Again it's never failed me but...

Both of these guys are close to me locally so I can get it "fitted" before build. CCR also works on shooter technique on range. A great selling point for me.

Bijou Creek, Mike Cuypers built my rifle.  I asked him to make it around 12 lb.  He could have made it 7.  Shoots under 1/2 MOA. He is in Colorado though.

I try to not broadcast things like that too much.  My wife is kind of shy and reserved and is easily embarrassed by any such attention...

She clearly married her opposite!

That uber-nice scope does bring up a good point: Consider your budget for the entire package, which can include a scope, rings, base, bipod, DBM + magazines. And that's just the rifle. Premium ammo or handloads are usually necessary to get the most out of a rifle. Will your overall budget be crimped enough to keep you from hitting the range as often as possible? Will your hunting go as well with a crap pair of binoculars or without a decent rangefinder? Will you cry (secretly inside, of course) when the rifle falls 10 feet down a rocky hillside?

I'm not saying don't do it. If you can be comfortable with the decision after considering these things, then go for it.
Reaction time is a factor...

This setup just reminds me of a cross between a 155 Long Tom, a 30mm Orlikon, and the Hubble telescope.Love Dan, your such a tease.
By the way Dan, what kind of scope did your wife get for you?
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.
