How much does inclination to the target and how level your rest is matter when you're zeroing?
I got a cheap little Leapers scope on a Gamo CFX .177 pellet gun and I'm getting alot of misses on what should be easy shots. I was going to re-zero when I just realized a potential problem. My makeshift little rest is actually pretty slanted and I'm shooting upwards towards the target at an angle of like 15 degrees. Now I'm wondering if this messed up my original zero in anyway, or does it not matter at the distance (30 yards) I'm shooting at and what I'm shooting with?

I'd say your problem starts with your Leapers..... and if it came with rings those too. They aren't known for consitancy.

Is the scope rated for air rifles. An air rifle will screw a scope up faster than a 50 BMG, unless it's made for air rifles.

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

That was the scope. I just assumed I screwed my zero up initially because of how I had the rifle rested. Spammer? How the f*** am I a spammer? S***, I get cheapskate. I mean, I'm a damn 18 year-old community college student who's just getting into this kind of s*** and doesn't have alot of money to throw around. But spammer?
Should it really matter too much considering what I'm shooting? I mean, I can see how it would with an actual gunpowder rifle. But a little spring-powered pellet gun? And besides it seems like the scope is off, but it's off consistently and just barely, you know? Like when I take a shot at a squirrel, it'll hit the branch and hit close enough for the squirrel to notice, almost every time. I'd just like to know if how I set up my target and rest messed up my zero before I go out and do the same s*** again for no reason.

Bushnell, Leupold and Burris are the most highly recommended options for "air gun" scopes. Leapers is pretty much recommended as an expensive paperweight.

Ok, provided I had a good scope would how I set up my rest and target have mattered. |

The answer you are looking for is that the inclination angle
does have an effect usually seen at long ranges and very steep angles and for practical
purposes it you will shoot high for both inclination and declination
angles. From the sighting conditions you
mentioned it should not be a problem.
Yes, spring-powered pellet gun is the worst on scopes due to the back and forth motions of the system. As for you missing hunting shots I would recommend you spend
time shooting at paper to see how the rifle/scope and ammo preform and gather some
metrics so you know what to expect while out hunting. Good Luck dsr

The biggest problem air gunners have with sighting in air rifles is the range to target and the height of the scope. If you sight at 30 yards and shoot at a target at 20 yards you will hit low. because of the difference in the alignment of the scope to the bore. If you sight in closer the the pellet will be high until you reach the apex of the trajectory then the pellet will drop back to the scope line and drop from there. The pellet arch in relationship to the scope line of sight is what makes for air rifles to be a real challenge to dial in shots. Accurate ranging, actual velocity and the pellet ballistic coefficient is imperative. American air gun has an on line calculator once you know the specifics on how your rifle shoots a particular pellet. Happy hunting. Edited by 3_tens - September/24/2011 at 16:24 |

Need to follow the rules. Just hard to determine which set of rules to follow Now the rules have changed again. |

I called spammer on the basis of your link to a seemingly nothing to do with your question.
And your foul language for an 18 year old sucks.

I may have missed this, but what Leapers scope are you using? Also, are you using a mount stop of any type?
I had a 6X Leapers Bug Buster on an RWS 350 Magnum. This gun kicks far more than your Gamo. The scope held zero with no problem, though the glass was not very good.
I would look at mounts before worrying about the angle of shot at air gun ranges. The 3/8 in-
11 mm dovetails are not very good at holding a scope in postion. I have had many problems through the years with this problem.

I linked to the scope I had buddy.
Since I apparently can't post links to something being sold by another site, description said it was a Leapers 5th Gen 4x32 Rifle Scope. The rings had a pin that could be screwed in to a hole in the rail. If that's a mount stop, than yeah, it has one.

Best info I can tell you, considering not knowing your knowledge base, is to Google question "How to adjust a rifle scope". Ehow has videos and will set you in a direction most helpfull to your pocket book && possibly your local to a gun shop that can give you info that's tough to relate in a online Q&A section. Hope this works for you !

My 177 hasn't been consistent with 2 different scopes...the latest an RWS for air rifles. I may not have shot it enough, and the action seems to have a little roughness. Good lluck.
