One of my guns needs a new 3-9x40 for deer hunting. I don't have a big budget this time so I am wondering which of these has better glass...?

Of the 3 you have listed I would go with the Burris. You may want to put some serious thought to the Vortex Viper 2-7 It is an excellent scope for the $149 discounted price. I was floored by the quality when I got one.

If you can step up a little Zeiss Conquest at $399 is an amazing value, with transferable lifetime warranty. Solid quality build and very good glass, it will do anything expected of a 3x9x40 and more.

I would really like to step up to the Zeiss but this time I need to keep the price down. |

I have owned two FFII's and really liked them. Both mine were blurry around the edges, but for the money found that acceptable and not so noticeable in the field. If I were facing your decision today, I'd have a hard look at the Redfield in person, then decide between the FFII & Redfield. I owned a VV in 2-7, but sold it in favor of a more expensive scope. I think any of the three mentioned are certainly at the top of the heap in the sub $200 category. I'm pretty sure the Redfield is American made, while the other two are made in the Philippines.
I did own a Nikon Monarch, which is a step up from the Buckmaster. I wasn't impressed - the FFII was better at half the price. I can't help wonder if my Monarch was a lemon, but I didn't want to bother dealing with Nikon over qualities that were intangible.

Redfield is American owned, by Leupold. Where it is made... Where its parts come from...

I'd second the burris recommendation. My buddy has a redfield and it is fine too. Really all of the scopes mentioned are pretty decent and somewhat comparable.

I would strongly be looking at the Vortex Viper as well. Its a great scope. And I would not let the fact that it is being discontinued bother me. And the magnification range is not that much different from the 3-9 you are looking at. Plus 2x on the low end may be a benefit since it will give you a wider field of view. |

Would I be loosing alot of low light performance going from a 40mm obj. down to the 32mm of the Viper?

I put a Burris 3x9x40 FF II on my rifle years ago as a temporary and it's still on my gun, I love that scope, it has been tougher than nails.

I would be inclined to say yes, there would be a noticeable difference. |

Maybe not. You've got to take into consideration the lens/coatings differences of higher priced/quality scopes. At one time that Viper would have once cost you close to $300 so we're talking a scope in a higher class than the others mentioned. I can tell you that when my Viper is set at 4x it compares favorably with my 4x32 Conquest.

I ended up finding a store that still had the Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40 for $199 so I went that route. Thanks for all your help
