I was wondering if anyone has seen improved accuracy or performance with moly bullets? I am thinking about ordering some 168amax moly. What are all the advatages. I want my sniper rifle to last forever will moly extend barrel life?

The advantage to moly coating is the increased interval between barrel cleaning times. Increases in velocity or accuracy may or maynot occur, and any increases in barrel life will come from not cleaning at much.

Thanks Dale. How often should I clean with regular bare metal bullets? Should I use a copper solvent every cleaning or should I use somthing like remingtons clean and lube all in one that seems to be a little less of a stip down to bare metal cleaner. |

Only clean when you need to. Meaning when your guns starts shooting badly. I can easily go 300 to 400+ rounds with my precision rifle.
Other rifles start to really foul and shoot larger groups with as little as 30 to 40 rounds. It just depends upon your rifle. I remember reading a post by Dale about his FN 300 WSM where he was over 1500 rounds with moly bullets without cleaning and it was still shooting good. I dare bet he got a lot higher than that as well. In reality some people wear out and ruin their barrels by cleaning. It is probably one of the worst things you can do to it. Improper cleaning techniques can really mess them up. |

And when you do clean, there is no reason to go all the way to bare-metal. It was a hard-lesson for this old Marine to take. But my rifles perform better if left a bit "seasoned".

As suggested above, only clean when the dreaded cone of carbon has built up (usually in the first six inches) and usually after 600-800 rds. in a lot of rifles, however this may go1000 rds in some with a more moderate bore to case ratio. The FN wsm was kind of test to push a chrome lined barrel with moly and at this date is excess of 2200 rds. with only one wipe through to check for residue. Another suggestion is to only pull brushes and patchs through, never push.. Avoid any ammonia containing solvents, usually Kroil works best.
Usually bullets molyed are to expensive but you can easily solve that by using a hodgdon 1lb powder canister filled with several boxes of bullets and a little moly placed in a vibrator case cleaner,(empty) for about an hour. Boron is the hot ticket these days with less mess, and safer handling properties.

Ok I know I am jumping all over the place here but do you guys believe in the whole barrel break in process of shoot clean shoot clean, ext during first shooting session?
Next ? Will this method of vibrating bullets with moly or boron turn the copper black like store bought molly bullets? Can I get this boron at midway? My uncle is a sales rep for hornady so I can get amax pretty cheap. My last batch he gave me for free but said he cant do that every time.
Thanks for all your help fellas. They are a little less patient with new guys over on snipers hide forum! LOL

The only barrel break in I do is running a kroil patch followed by a dry patch, to remove anything foreign that may have got into the barrel by the time i get it. Yes the vibrating method looks identical to the store bought, and I don't think midway has boron do a web search, but the last stuff I heard of was out of Canada. |
