I have not used many scopes in the past so I am not sure what to look for. My application will be on AR style rifles 5.56-7.62, will be used in very rough conditions so it needs to be tough. Etched glass sounds good to me and I would imagine it would last forever, however I have read on google searches that etched glass is not as durable but this does not really make sense to me. Does anyone have any info on this subject?

Etched glass reticles, are the only way to go in my opinion. Etched glass is not only more durable, but usually finer than wire reticles.

If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

Unfortunately they are not all immune from turning. But they are the only reticle I will buy.

My understanding is that etched reticles are less problematic
than any other way of making reticles.
I assume that what you are referring to in your internet search is the etching
creates a stress riser, a potential area where a crack will occur. Etched reticles do allow reticles designs
that are impossible by other methods.
Personally I would not consider a scope without an etched reticle. |

Thanks for the input. Sorry for not being clear. I am wondering about etched glass reticles, I noticed that etched glass reticles cost more than others. There were not any specifics said about them other they are pron to failure and that was to unspecific for me so I have just been digging around. I will definitely be getting a etched glass scope.

While etched glass reticles do allow more variety of different designs, I will say this: whether the reticle is etched glass or wire makes very little difference to me for as long as the the manufacturer knows what he is doing and can execute it properly. Etched glass reticles are not any more prone to failure than wire reticles. If anything, these days they are likely a touch more durable, but I do not think the difference matters.

Hay now Cheaptrick I'm taking it easy, I'm not easy, well most of the time anyways. Yeah after reading for days and days I think I am starting to know what to look for in optics. I was a few days away form buying a BSA BSA-4-16x40-Contender until I found this forum now I am looking at getting the.

Whewww! Just in time huh. Now that would have been a live and learn experience. Glad you found the forum. I remember the Tasco days of yesteryear. 1980something or other. Andrew

Yes, I still have a Tasco 1-5 in my drawer bought around 1985.
I am amazed how clear it seems and is in fact a pretty good scope. (Made in Japan)

Does etched glass mean FFP or can it be on a SFP scope?

It can be in either focal plane. It just means an extra glass element must be accounted for in the optical design, but there are plenty of etched reticle scopes in both FFP and SFP, and even a few that have etched reticles in both simultaneously.
