I have a Sightron Big Sky 4-16x42 on my Kidd 10/22.
It's a nice scope and I have been happy with it, except for the reticle. I went
with the dot reticle, really thin cross hairs and a very small dot in the
center. It's ok for target shooting but not great for plinking and such. Maybe
it's just that my eyes are getting older but I have a hard time seeing the
reticle. So, since I'm changing the scope for this reason, I figured why not
look around and maybe upgrade while I'm at it. I have set the budget at $1000.
Any suggestions? Keep in mind that while the gun is mostly used for punchin
paper, it is also used for plinking and squirrels.

That' s a nice budget for a .22lr.I have a Minox Z5 2-10 x 40 [plex ret.] on my Savage Mkll& a Minox 4-20 x 50 on my Spikes AR15 type .22lr [BDC ret.]I find the glass to be excellent. Both are with in your range.I also use 1 piece tally rings on the Savage & Burris tactical on the AR15.
There are many choices afforded you ,as far as the scope goes,a few more might be SWFA SS10X,Vortex Vipers, great sales on some Z3 Swaro & if you like the Sightron go with the MK lll.

Thanks, but I'm looking for more mag, not less. I do like the SS 5-20 but don't feel it is worth 1500. For that price I would go with a Nightforce.

How close are you thinking of shooting. Most rifle scopes have a parallax setting of 100yds. Which I would not want on a rimfire. I could see using the Minox 4-20 since it has a parallax setting down to 25yds. Or a Bushnell 6500 2.5-16 which I believe goes down to 25yds also(But I would check on that to make sure before purchasing). I personally I would pass on the SS 3-9 for a rimfire. I believe it has a parallax setting of either 100 or 150yds. On a center fire however I would say go for it.
Or since you are happy with what you have with the exception of the the reticle. How about seeing about sending it back to Sightron and having the reticle changed to something more to your liking? Or trading it in for a new one with a different reticle? Also you talked about a Nightforce. All the NSX scopes I believe go down to a parallax setting of 50yds. But the benchrest or BR series go down to 25yds. but they start at 8-32 for magnification and are big and heavy. So once again I would pass on these for a rimfire for plinking. |

For a 10/22 I'd look hard at this scope but reading your post I'm not sure if you'd have a problem with the reticle.

Maybe. I prefer things that have stood the test of time. The SS line may turn out to be one. They certainly look as though they will. The Nightforce scopes already have a great durability reputation. If I find myself looking for a FFP scope a few years from now, I'll take a good look at the SS.

Had one on my CZ 452 Varmint. Very nice scope but not what I'm looking for on this one.

Target shooting is done at 25 - 100 yds mostly. But, you never know where the squirrel or groundhog is gonna turn up. Although I try to make sure they are 25-50 yds away. The Bushy 2.5-16 goes down to 10yds, the 4.5-30 goes down to 25. I thought about just getting another Big Sky but, I also want a little more magnification without giving up the low end of 4.

Also, I just tossed the Nightforce name out there for the heck of it. They are not getting any serious consideration for this rifle.

Went with the Bushnell Elite Tactical 4.5-30x50. Seems to have everything I'm looking for. Hope to get it sighted in this weekend.

Certainly looks "the business". Let us know how it shoots.
It took me a lot of experimentation and money to make my 10/22 into a competitive shooter! |
