    Posted: July/01/2011 at 10:59
Hello, I just subscribed. I called Leupold and spoke to two people and they had no idea what I was talking about. I asked if Leupold produced a scope, for a rifle, that would allow crosshairs and subsequently point of impact to occur from five feet to fifty feet. In many scopes I find that the elevation screw will turn no further and I cannot place point of impact at fifty feet! I want a scope that will allow me to place the crosshairs and of course bullet impact at fifty feet and less. Anyone got a brand name and model number to suggest? Thank you in advance.

Lots of scopes do not focus close this one will focus as close as 10 yards and has over 100 moa of internal adjustment so equal to 100 inches top to bottom at 100 yds or 50 inches top to bottom at 50 yds.

This scope is set for parallax at 100 yds  however it has 120 moa of internal adjustment so that is  120 inches at 100 yds or  60 inches of adjustment at 50 yds top to bottom.

If you can advise what your application is  type rifle type target I may be able to make a better suggestion.  I think any of these should work for you but if we are talking about using it on an air rifle rather than a rimfire or centerfire there may be some other concerns.

Five Feet????  thats a considerable angle from the line of site to the line of the bore but doable if you can focus down i guess.  Key would be keeping it as close to the bore as possible. Then again not sure if that would be better or putting it high up on a canted base would work better

Getting a scope that will be able to focus as close as five feet is tough.  Your best bet woul dbe a variable of some sort that goes to really low magnification and has very close focus.

As far as elevation adjustment goes, part of the problem is scope mounting.  You have to mount the scope as low as humanly possible to get it as close to the bore axis as you can.  Otherwise, five feet may be a pipe dream.

Even then, one thing you can consider is getting a reticle with additional aiming point, like the mil-dot or similar and using one of the lower aiming points at close range.

Thank you for the answers!. You are using technical terms I'll have to look up. I intend to shoot varmints at fifty feet or less: squirrels, rabbits, RATS! I shoot a Benjamin Marauder pellet rifle in .177 caliber. (And watch out for Crosman pellets! Last can was short by THREE pellets!) I had scopes that came with the various pellet guns I bought and subsequently have placed in the corner in favor of my baby, the Benjamin Marauder. I had just one default scope that BARELY allowed me to set the crosshairs at FIFTY feet! But five to fifty feet is what I'm after. So thank you very much for your suggestions and any future suggestions now that you know what I shoot and what I'm shooting at!!!

At 5 ft even with iron sights you would have to account for the difference between the bore and height of the sight.  About the only thing I shoot that close is snakes.  I can understand the frustration of not having enough internal adjustment to get your zero.

I have a 4x Barska airgun scope that focuses down to 10 feet (mounted on a 22). It also has a "mil-dot" style reticle. Granted, Barska is known for its low quality, but this one specimen is actually ok. I've used it with colibri's at about 10 feet to dispatch pests.

What about a red dot? For short distances or zapping rodents in low light conditions I wouldn't mind a little illumination.

If the 6x42 Super Sniper is not out of your price range I would suggest that as first choice.

Sounds like its being mounted on an air rifle. I seriously doubt the Barska would take the pounding of an air rifle. If you find anything that works bettry than Irons at that short of range let me know, I have a lot of turtles in my pond.

Koshkin,

Wouldn't taking a regular scope and elevating the rear with burris signature inserts, or a radical rail, such that when the scope was mechanically centered, it would be pointed at a point 5ft from the muzzle.   If you could get enough elevation travel could you use the turret to point to a spot 50 ft from the muzzle?  I haven't done the math, and I've not heard of a scope that will focus 5 feet from the muzzle.

Actually I have one that will focus 5 ft from the muzzle it is a 1x Burris Scout scope but they no longer make it.  At 5 ft you dont need a scope point and shoot.

You could impale the animal at 5ft.  Save the ammo.

Yes, that would work, although the angle would have to be quite severe.

Welcome to OT, Shootfan!

Personally, I would just use iron sights if I were you.
