was looking to buy a weatherby in either the 257 or 270 cal. going on the weatherby site tells me the 270 is a mediun game gun and 257 is a big game rifle..but when i talk to gun shops they seem to pass of the 257 as a pop gun...wondering what a few of you think.....keep in mind the majority of my hunt is deer on the prairies but would still like a gun that could handle an elk once in a while......

Both are extremely flat shooting, but I think the 270wby would offer more versatility which you alluded too.  If deer, goats and sheep are your main objective, the .257 is hard to beat. If elk, bear or Africa are on the menu, I'd choose the .270.

Just get both Wink

I have friends who swear by the .257 for deer.  Might be a little light for Elk.  I personally chose the .270.  Extremely flat shooting and with a tough premium 150g or 160g bullet should work very well for Elk.  Would like to have a .257 also, but, my .25-06 is getting it done so I can't j jj jj jjuistify it to the wife.

both will handle elk just fine. the .270wby imo, is one of the most UNDER appreciated rounds in weatherby's line. it will keel a lot of game on any continent.

WOW  I cannot believe Pyro just had something good to say about a 27o cal.

The .257 Wby certainly is not a "pop gun". I do agree with the other posts though... if elk are in the mix, go .270 Wby.

I'm voting .257 cal.  IF later on you would decide to get a larger caliber you'd be covered on the small end.  For sure!

I would disagree with you there.  They may in beat the 270 Win by a little bit in velocity, but the cost of the ammo or extra in reloading is more than the gains are worth in my opinion.  The performance gain isn't enough to impress me vs the 270 win.  Plus the 270 will kill anything wby or wsm will.

that last line is very true, but in my book a velocity increase of almost 400fps is significant.

Has anyone used the .270wby ammunition?
Had a bit of extra cash and went and bought a box, 150gr Nosler tips.  Some of the most expensive I ever bought.  However, the rounds were everywhere on the paper at 100 yards.  I don't know if it was the rifle, did not cool enough between shots, or the rounds.  Currently not impressed with the ammo.
Opinions??

I agree,

both are great.

The .257 has a certain hot-rod appeal.

The 270WSM and 270Weatherby both have significant gains over the 270 win. in trajectory, if not on-game performance.  They have little to gain over each other, however.

got a few freinds up here that say the same thing, use the right bullet and the right grain and at 3400 fps there's very little you wouldn't kill..the 270 is probably the better choice but just love the 257....and if it was good enough for roy it good enough for a peon like me.........ps.i notice that federal premiun make the 270
in a weatherby rounds, how do they compare with weatherby or is it just a cost savings thing...

Both are good rifles.  For bigger game (like elk) I'd go with the .270.  It was the all-around choice of a Weatherby dealer in Kentucky who had done a lot of hunting

I dont have my reloading books around, but looking at the online stuff I can find, I can only find really about 100 fps gain for the WSM and a 200 to 250 fps for the WBY in loads people have actually posted.  I am sure that you can push stuff faster with hot loads, but for the cost difference, the 100 to 200 fps gain is not enough for me.
