Looking for a tactical scope for my SCAR 17. Most ranges in my area are going out 300yds only, but I would like to sbe able to shoot further (just in case). Also, would consider shooting 3-gun in the future. Looking to keep things btwn $500-$1k. Im a novice shooter, and have lots to learn. Was thinking about the Viper PST 1-4x24 or Trijicon TR24G. Need illumination red dot, any thoughts??

Then I'd get the SS with the Donut of Death and call it a day. Comparibly there is no other 1-4 that come close to its performance.

I know I am in the definite minority. I suggest the ACOG oddly it is as the world has changed with the 1-4 crowd I believe you can get great results with a new or used I believe you could then mount a doctor site later on for the insanely close shots of the 3 gun matches. I am not saying a 1-4 doesn't have its place but an ACOG has a bigger objective and is lots easier on they eyes and math if you get the correct reticle for the correct bullet. They are indestructible and they never lose power.

The PST is not in the same league as the SS 1-4x, I would not even go there. I have had the Accupoint 1-4x, it is a great scope. But I like the SS 1-4x better. I got one SS 1-4x and after using it for a while, I then sold the Accupoint and bought another SS 1-4x.
I have both the T reticle and the donut. If I were to have just one, I would pick the T reticle, but that is just me. Others like the donut better. I had a 3x ACOG for a while, it had the green horseshoe reticle. It was a very good scope, but I ended up selling it for the Accupoint, and liked the Accupoint a lot better. I think 1-4x are the cats meow for AR and similar type rifles. |

I have the SS1-4X with donut reticle and like it allot.
The optic I'd recommend depends entirely on what the rifle has to do and what you would like the rifle to do. If it is to be a range gun mostly, I'd go for more magnification than a 1-4X offers; however, if it is to be a 3-gun or home defense gun, 1-4X is close to perfect. I am curious to know why a novice shooter chose a SCAR?

I chose the SCAR bc I didnt want a 556. I wanted a 308 SHTF rifle and wasnt impress with the AR platform so I decided on the SCAR. Main focus was STOPPING POWER and the 556 doesnt have it!
I think I'm gonna save some extra $$ and bite the bullet on an Elcan Specter DR 1-4x. I love the reticle on the scope and think it would be a great match for that rifle. I wanted something I can have combat accuracy past 300 yards.

I had a Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14 X 50 on my SCAR-17 until last week. I was just not happy with it and was looking around for a replacement. I was considering going up to the Vortex Razor HD 5 - 20 X 50 but I didn't have one around to look at. So, I borrowed a Vortex Viper PST 6 - 24 X 50 to get a feel for the Vortex (I have a pair of Vortex Razor HD 10 X 42 binoculars I love). So, I took the Vortex Viper out to the range to compare it with the Mark 4. To my shock the Vortex Viper PST was much clearer and had better resolution (I did the obligatory test on lined paper with the lines getting smaller and the Vortex PST could see much smaller lines than the Mark 4). I actually changed my mind about getting the Razor-HD and bought the Viper PST (at half the price). Don't get me wrong. The SCAR-17 is a 16.5" barrel battle rifle firing .308. If I were looking to mount something on a precision rifle I would be looking at better glass. However, I am sure that I can reach out 600 yds with the Viper PST and the 16.5" barrel. Getting a better scope than that won't help me reach out any farther with the rifle that is not designed for high precision. However, I do have a higher precision rifle coming and I am looking up toward an alpha scope for that. In the case of the SCAR-heavy the Viper PST can do more than the rifle and more than the original Mark 4.

I would hope so. I was out shooting my 16 inch AR-15 last night and was making hits at 850 and 900 yards. Shooting 75 grain hornady bullets at 2550 fps. I only have a SS 1-4x scope on mine. I also shot a 2 inch 5 shot group at 300 yards. The need for high magnification for making good hits at longer ranged is way overrated IMO. A 6-24x is way overkill IMO for a so called battle rifle. It will ruin the balance and is way to much magnification to use for anything remotely close range. If it were me, I would save that 6-24 for your precision rifle and get a practical optic for your SCAR. |
