I am looking for a new gun that would be good for hunting in east Texas and shoots pretty flat. I currently have a .243 but am looking for something new. I have been looking at .257 weatherby mag a little or a .270wsm or .270 weatherby. I just wanted yalls opinions on these calibers or any suggestions. Thanks!

Those are all high velocity rounds, so they would all be very flat out to 200 yards.

Just about any modern big game cartridge shoots flat out to 200 yards: anything in the 308 family or 30-06 family will do fine.

Just looking at some ballistic charts.
A 140 grain bullet going 3100 out of the 270 wsm 200 yard zero will drop about 8 inches from the bore line at 200 yards. A 257 weatherby 115 grain going 3400 fps at 200 yard zero will drop 6.5 inches from the bore line at 200 yards. The 270 weatherby 140gr, 3300 fps. would drop 7 inches from boreline at 200 yard zero A 30-06 168 grain going 2700 fps 200 yard zero will drop 10.5 inches from bore line at 200 yards. Also because of the higher velocities the 270 and 257 will have more energy 200 yards and under vs the 06. But the 06 will make a bigger hole and will penetrate deeper because of the heavier bullet. But for deer sized game that won't really matter as any of them would go right through easy enough. Edited by supertool73 - May/02/2011 at 11:23 |

I have friends who shoot the 257, pretty explosive round, shoots flat, velocity is impressive, wounds are really ugly. BUt, unless you reload, ammo is expensive.
I have a 260 Rem, it is a 308 case necked down to a .265-cal bullet, shoots very flat, light recoil. But, again, ammo not cheap or easy to find. The 270 is a great caliber (in my opinion) and quite capable out to 200 yards and beyond. It all comes down to what you wish to accomplish. I hunt in west Texas where, if the animal runs 10 yards, he might be gone forever. There, the priority is the "bang-flop" shot. Your priorities might differ. Be aware that these really fast bullets (2900+) liquify meat. Hit a doe with a 300WM or 257 in any meat, you won't be eating that quarter.

no one's mentioned the 7mm-08 yet, so i will. it's a 308 necked down to 7mm (.284) cal bullet and is very favorably compared to all the rounds mentioned thus far for deer sized animals. it's also pretty flat out to 300 yards, so 200 would be fine.

"Flat shooting" is an irrelevant attribute for 200 yds and under shots. Any reasonable big game round will suffice. Zero at 200 yds and aim dead on at anything from 10 feet to 200 yds.

For me it would be a good 270 winchester. No need for a magnum. It is plenty flat especially to 200yds and the ammo is common and reative cheap. Here blue box federal ammo is about $14-$15 and very capable on deer and similar animals. There are also plenty of premium loads avaliable if you want to shoot and elk someday.

Sorry but I have to agree the .25-06 is magnum type round with very little recoil, allows for anything from varmint to CXP2 game with ease and shoots very flat. Also not mentioned yet, the 6.5x55 is another sweet round. |

Yeah, just about anything with decent ballistics and velocity will get out to 300 yards inside an imaginary 8" diameter tube. In other words, it may be 3-4" high from 50-150 yards, 0" @ 250 yards and 4" low @ 300. Some shooters, myself included, have chosen to go with the dial-in route for long shots, which is only necessary should you care to get out beyond 300.
For a good, readily-available round without as much kick as some, I'd go with a .270. But if reload, consider the 7mm-08. Grain for grain, you can get better ballistics than a .308 and load for less recoil. |

Just a note: 2700 fps for a .30-06 w/168gr. bullet is a bit weak. 2900 fps is more like it...
.30-06 shoots most high performance loads from 125-200 gr bullets with a drop from muzzle of 8-9". All of this is irrelevant, really, as all calibers mentioned will get the job done for deer. My .30-06's are mostly all zeroed at 200 yds, which is less than 2" high at 100. How flat is flat? |

I like the 270 Win for a good all around. But as many have said, for 200 yards, any big game riffle will be fine and flat shooting.

frankly, you already own a fantastic deer caliber
sight in 1.5" high at 100 yards and it's a dead hold out to 250 or so there's no "need" for a different caliber, but, that's never stopped any of us :) |
