can't get it running,  Something in the starting chain, won't turn over, can't find a loose wire or fuze.  It started to crank, then just quit...

Picture below was taken a few miles from where I live...  Wed I think...

Tractor: Flat battery and the lead from starter engine to earth would be my first guess.

I hate tractors too. Ever try operating without brakes one on a hillside?
Glad that thing in the picture didn't try to visit your house. It was still to close.
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

Have you tried spraying some Ether- starting fluid into the carb?

I love tractors - especially with a rim-weight as in mike650´s picture, would like four of them on the Ford County 4x4....

I had to replace my ignition switch once, and you might check if you have a safety switch on the clutch peddle for a loose wire. I also have a wire on the solenoid that is always coming off.

Mike, now that's a migrant worker program I could support.

As for a tornado like that, run? Hell no, I'd be digging a hole to China and pulling the tractor over it after me with my bare teeth.
Reaction time is a factor...

Tornado: holy crap batman!!

wheel weight: whew!

Tractor: if it's been awhile since you last used it the brushes might be sticking a little...try bumping the starter housing lightly with a hammer.

SOunds like its the starter itself Dan.  The Bendix is probably stuck in mid position.  I've had to pul;l starter and spray WD40 on throw out shaft then manually push bendix back home.  If staerter is left on too long with bendix partially out it can cause the solenoid to whorp or swell.

Glad you and the girls are okay!  Hope you get that driveway re-graded soon!

Dan I feel your driveway pain. Been waiting for the weather to break so I can do some major repair and improvements. The weather just seems to break my drive though.
