Dentist nearly sent me to the hospital with a heart attack today. BOTH my kids (10 and 14 ) are having braces put on in the next couple of weeks. I couldn't believe it. $11,400 .
My insurance is gonna take care of $1500 on each of them, but the rest is cold, hard, HARD EARNED cash. I guess I'm still livin' in the '80's, when my braces cost about $1000.
Days like this really make me see why I shoulda gone to college. I don't mind spending the cash on my children, mind you, I've just been out of the loop for a long time and wasn't expecting the numbers put before me.
Looks like I might be cleaning out the safe some more.....Shocked.

Just needed to vent a little, guys.

Right there with you. Both my kids will have them. They are 13 and 10

ugh... your bringing back bad memories for me... 5k is the norm for braces, we did 3 kids.  Look on the bright side.  I know several parents that have put their kids thru 2 sets... The dentist are convincing you that if your teeth are bad enough, you put a set on with the baby teeth.  This is supposed to make the second set with the adult teeth a smoother easier effort.  Loco

That sounds about right. They did two pairs on my younger daughter and the second time was  $4K in late 2005. Four months later she had to have them removed for an MRI.

I feel for you man.  Last year I spent over that on my wife to have implant surgery to fix her mouth from her not being born with some of her teeth......

Makes me glad I spent the extra to upgrage my dental insurance from Preventative to the Comprehensive Plan.  My daughter's braces only cost me 1K out of pocket.  Whew!

For $11400 you can fly yourself, your rifle and oops allmost forgot, the two kids to South Africa.
Whilst they are having the braces done we can go hunt and you should have change left.

Braces are about $2000 a piece. So say max $4000 for the two.

I'm currently in the process of getting one implant tooth. It takes months to complete and the cost is about $4500. Fecalifera to be sure. Whacko

Reminds me of when my friend got a hernia in Mali. He duct-taped cardboard over it and waited 10 days before coming back to the U.S. for surgery. I told him he would have saved a lot of money if he had it done there...if he survived.

I know S.A. has better health care than Mali, but the problem with braces seems to me is the continual adjustment needed over time. I think a couple of our kids will need them so we might check into supplemental coverage too.

Yikes. One (uninsured) is enough. It's cutting in to the gun money!

Yes, indeed ! I finally have accumulated some firearms I have wanted all my life in just the last 3 years. Guns my wife and family have given me, will stay, but things I've bought myself , well , it may be  time to let it go.
I'm glad I bought a nice but used bassboat last summer. Bass fishing is my passion, and I've almost got the boat paid for. Besides, my kids like going with me also, so it must stay.

My wife explained to me that our daughter's braces cost us 7k minus what her insurance covered which brought it down to 4.7k. We have to wait until her insurance has paid their share before we can submit the balance to my insurance to see what they'll cover. From what we're being told mine may or may not cover it because it's secondary... what a scam.  Whatever  So for my daughter the cost is probably going to be around 5k.

Changing gears... Derek, your into bass fishing?? Cool!!!  Thunbs Up

I got to three and figured the best healthcare money I ever spent was to get snipped.

My oldest just got her's off and my youngest just started. My youngest, Colette, needed a palate expander which added 2400 to the bill. My dental plan doesn't cover braces.

Why did I ever read this thread!

My son's permanent teeth are coming in and look like an 80 year old picket fence!

Really Sad
